Albania has reached a major renewable energy milestone as Trina Solar delivers 140 MW of bifacial photovoltaic modules to Voltalia’s Karavasta Solar Park, the largest solar installation in the Western Balkans. Located near the Karavasta Lagoon, the project represents a key step in the country’s transition toward large-scale, subsidy-free solar generation.
Developed, built and operated by Voltalia, Karavasta Solar was awarded through a 2022 Albanian government tender and is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The project uses Trina Solar’s Vertex dual-glass bifacial modules mounted on single-axis trackers, optimized for the site’s flat terrain. Once fully operational, the 140 MW plant is expected to produce approximately 265 GWh annually, enough to supply electricity to around 220,000 households while avoiding nearly 29,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The plant operates under a power purchase agreement (PPA) model, with 50% of output sold to Albania’s public grid under a 15-year contract and the remainder contracted to private offtakers. Beyond energy generation, Voltalia has committed 1% of total investment to local social initiatives and prioritized local employment, reinforcing the project’s long-term regional impact.
