LuxWall has launched LW-001 Transparent Insulation, an AIA-approved continuing education course designed to introduce architects and design professionals to vacuum-insulated glazing technology and its potential applications in high-performance buildings.
The course is approved for 1 AIA Learning Unit (LU) Elective and covers the fundamentals of heat transfer through fenestration, including conduction, convection and radiation. It explains how vacuum insulation suppresses these heat-transfer mechanisms to achieve significantly higher thermal resistance.
According to LuxWall, its Transparent Insulation technology can deliver an R-18 center-of-glass performance. The system incorporates low-E coated and clear tempered glass, structural micro-pillars, a getter, hermetic edge seal and evacuation port.
The course also compares Transparent Insulation with conventional double- and triple-pane insulating glass units (IGUs) across thermal, optical, acoustic and embodied-carbon performance. At comparable visible light transmittance and solar heat gain coefficient, LuxWall states that Transparent Insulation provides approximately three to six times the center-of-glass R-value of conventional double- and triple-pane IGUs while maintaining a slimmer profile.
Course objectives include understanding vacuum insulation principles, evaluating frame temperature and condensation resistance, and assessing acoustic and occupant health, safety and welfare considerations when specifying advanced glazing systems.
