Kuraray has introduced SentryGlas Acoustic® (SGA®), a new interlayer designed to combine the structural performance of SentryGlas® with improved acoustic attenuation. The development extends the SentryGlas range into applications where structural resistance, sound insulation and reduced glazing thickness are required simultaneously.
SentryGlas Acoustic® uses a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) core layer positioned between two stiff ionomer outer layers. The TPE provides acoustic performance, while the ionomer layers retain the impact resistance and structural capabilities associated with SentryGlas®. According to Kuraray, the material can pass stringent large-missile-impact tests for applications exposed to high design pressures, including hurricane-prone regions.
The new interlayer was developed with hurricane-resistant glazing in mind, but Kuraray identifies a wider range of applications, including airport windows, overhead glazing and atrium structures. Its acoustic and structural properties can enable thinner and lighter glazing constructions than those typically using conventional acoustic PVB interlayers. SentryGlas Acoustic® can also be combined with SentryGlas® or SentryGlas Xtra® where additional performance is required.
Testing commissioned and conducted by Kuraray indicates that SGA® can reduce perceived sound by approximately 50% over specific frequencies compared with traditional SentryGlas®. Its Sound Transmission Class (STC) and dB(Rw) ratings are reported to be three points higher than those of standard SentryGlas®, reaching performance comparable to an acoustic PVB. Air gaps and multi-panel configurations can further increase acoustic performance.
The product retains SentryGlas®’s high optical clarity, UV screening and transparency, while Kuraray has also conducted weathering, environmental, impact, transmittance and sealant-compatibility testing.
A further benefit is related to material efficiency. By achieving comparable structural and acoustic performance with thinner glazing assemblies, SentryGlas Acoustic® can reduce glass thickness and overall panel weight. Kuraray says this can lower embodied carbon, manufacturing energy and transportation requirements, positioning the new interlayer as an option for projects seeking to combine structural performance, acoustic comfort and material efficiency.
