German aluminium producer TRIMET is preparing to open a new aluminium scrap recycling facility in Hamm, Germany, strengthening its capacity to supply high-quality secondary raw materials to foundries and remelting plants.
Scheduled to begin operations in October 2026, the site will have an annual processing capacity of 40,000 tonnes. Its core technology is a modern LIBS-based sorting system, designed to analyse aluminium scrap at high speed and separate materials according to their alloy composition. The system can reportedly assess up to 150 pieces per second, identifying elements including silicon, copper, iron and magnesium before directing the material into the appropriate fractions using targeted air pulses.
Once sorted, the scrap will be compressed into transportable packages and prepared for remelting. The investment brings processing stages previously handled by external partners into TRIMET’s own recycling network, giving the company greater control over material supply and alloy availability.
The Hamm project forms part of TRIMET’s wider recycling expansion in Germany, alongside capacity investments in Gelsenkirchen and Essen. By improving alloy-specific sorting and increasing the use of secondary aluminium, the company aims to reduce dependence on primary raw materials while supporting lower-carbon aluminium production and more efficient circular material flows.
