Ardagh Glass Packaging’s Neuenhagen container glass plant in Germany has implemented a modular vacuum concept from Busch Vacuum Solutions, introducing a more efficient and precisely controlled vacuum system for continuous industrial operation.

The installation is based on Cobra NC dry screw vacuum pumps, which use contactless screw technology without operating liquids in the compression chamber. Unlike conventional systems that operate continuously at a fixed capacity, the new solution automatically adapts the pumps’ volumetric capacity to changing process conditions.

Frequency converters regulate motor speed continuously, while integrated pressure measurement monitors the current vacuum level. The control system then adjusts pump speed accordingly, maintaining a stable vacuum even when operating conditions change.

The pumps operate predominantly in the partial-load range, increasing power only when required. This approach reduces mechanical and thermal loads while limiting wear and supporting longer operating life.

For Ardagh, the upgrade has also addressed pressure fluctuations experienced with the previous vacuum technology. Guido Reichelt, Electrical Foreman at Ardagh Neuenhagen, said the new system has significantly improved process stability by maintaining a constant vacuum level and creating more uniform forming conditions.
