The BMO Centre Expansion in Calgary represents a defining milestone in contemporary civic and exhibition architecture, significantly elevating the city’s position within the international meetings and conventions sector. Delivered as a transformational extension of the long-established facility serving the Calgary Stampede, the project has nearly doubled the centre’s operational capacity, establishing it as the second-largest convention venue in Canada.

Originally developed as a premier venue for trade shows, conferences, and cultural programming, the expansion, valued at approximately $500 million, introduces a new architectural standard defined by scale, flexibility, and material performance. The project typology is that of a high-capacity congress centre, designed to accommodate simultaneous large-scale events while maintaining fluid circulation and operational efficiency.

Architectural leadership was provided by Populous, working in close collaboration with Stantec and S2 Architecture. Development oversight was coordinated through the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and supported by the Calgary Stampede organization, ensuring alignment between civic ambition and long-term urban infrastructure strategy.

S2 Architecture played a key role across all project phases, including enabling works, demolition coordination, and construction administration leadership. They managed complex sequencing across overlapping tender packages to keep the existing structure operational during major adaptations, requiring detailed temporary works coordination, logistics planning, and staged transitions. In Phase 3, they acted as Construction Administration Lead, overseeing additional tender packages to ensure continuity through the full build programme.

A defining technical component of the project façade strategy is the integration of high-performance glazing systems, including double glazing IGU units from Tvitec System Glass | Cricursa, incorporating DURITEC tempered specifications, supplied in collaboration with the project teams at Populous, Stantec, and installed by Ferguson Corporation. This material approach supports both the architectural language and the environmental performance targets of the building, contributing to thermal efficiency, durability, and visual transparency across large-scale envelope surfaces.

The completed expansion, finalised in 2024, spans approximately 93,000 square metres and introduces advanced spatial configurations for exhibitions, conferences, and public events. Its design prioritises adaptability, visitor flow optimisation, and structural clarity, enabling it to host international-scale programming with enhanced operational resilience.

In recognition of its architectural and technical achievement, the project received multiple awards in 2025, including the International Architecture Award in the Civic Centre category, alongside several honours from the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada. Collectively, the BMO Centre Expansion stands as a benchmark in collaborative design and construction delivery, where Populous, Stantec, S2 Architecture, and the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation converged to reshape a major civic landmark.
