EGA Spectro Alloys, the Minnesota-based aluminum recycling facility, has opened a metallurgical testing laboratory as part of its $71 million expansion project. The lab, the first of its kind for Dubai-based Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) in North America, conducts metallographic analyses and mechanical testing of finished products. It also offers sample testing from customer castings and extrusions, helping to troubleshoot and optimize downstream quality while providing faster, more accurate analysis services.

Under EGA’s leadership, investment in the lab has tripled, transforming it into one of the most advanced facilities in the aluminum recycling industry. “EGA is recognized as the premier, top-quality aluminum producer,” said Luke Palen, EGA Spectro Alloys President. “Our goal is to extend the same quality and reputation to recycled aluminum and support customers across North America.”

The expansion adds 55,000 tonnes of secondary billet production capacity in the first phase, bringing total output to 165,000 tonnes annually. Recycling aluminum requires 95% less energy than primary production and generates far fewer greenhouse gas emissions. With U.S. demand for recycled aluminum expected to reach 7.6 million tonnes per year by 2033, the lab strengthens EGA Spectro’s ability to deliver reliable, sustainable, low-carbon aluminum to customers.
