<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Hainan Science Museum in Haikou, designed by <a href="https://www.i-mad.com/articles/ma-yansong-builds-a-science-museum-that-floats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">MAD Architects</a> under Ma Yansong, represents a significant example of contemporary large-scale cultural architecture in China, combining structural innovation with an integrated educational brief. Located adjacent to the Wuyuan River National Wetland Park, the building occupies approximately 46,500–46,528 square meters and functions as a regional science education hub for Hainan Province.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The project is defined by a continuous spiral geometry that organizes both form and program. Rather than relying on a conventional stacked typology, the museum consolidates its exhibition spaces, planetarium, large-format cinema, and ancillary educational functions into a single uninterrupted circulation system. This spatial strategy eliminates discrete floor-based zoning in favor of a continuous experiential sequence, where visitors traverse scientific themes through a gradual vertical progression.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Structurally, the museum is distinguished by its column-free interior system. The spiraling exhibition floors are supported by three primary reinforced concrete core tubes, which accommodate both gravity loads and lateral stability requirements. This structural approach enables the creation of large, unobstructed gallery spaces while maintaining the integrity of the complex curved geometry. The separation of structural support from the exhibition envelope is central to the project’s spatial performance.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building envelope is composed of approximately 843 fiber-reinforced polymer panels forming a continuous metallic cladding system. This skin operates both as environmental mediation and visual articulation, responding to Hainan’s high humidity, intense solar exposure, and coastal atmospheric conditions. The façade’s horizontal slot openings introduce controlled permeability, revealing interior circulation and reinforcing the stratified depth of the spiraling volume.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Programmatically, the museum extends beyond exhibition functions to include a planetarium, immersive screening facilities, a sunken public plaza, and outdoor landscaped zones. These components position the building as a hybrid civic infrastructure rather than a singular institutional object.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The site strategy reinforces this role. Situated within a dense educational district containing more than 30 schools and kindergartens, the museum is integrated into everyday urban pedagogy rather than isolated cultural consumption. Its adjacency to ecological landscape systems further anchors the project within a broader environmental framework.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">NorthGlass is deepening its cooperation with the Architectural Curtain Wall Committee of the Shanghai Society of Architecture as both parties move to support innovation, sustainability, and higher-quality development across Shanghai’s curtain wall sector.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On April 24, a delegation from the committee, led by Director Huang Qiuping, Executive Deputy Director Meng Genbaoligao, and Secretary-General Zhang Hai, visited NorthGlass for an inspection tour and strategic discussions. The delegation was welcomed by Li Chunchao, Marketing Director of NorthGlass, together with the company’s core marketing team.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the symposium, both sides focused on the future direction of Shanghai’s curtain wall industry, with discussions centered on high-quality development, green construction practices, and deeper collaboration within the regional market. A major outcome of the meeting was the agreement to use the upcoming exhibition celebrating 40 years of Shanghai’s architectural curtain wall achievements as the launch platform for a long-term strategic partnership between the association and NorthGlass.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The discussions covered several priority areas, including support for major construction projects in Shanghai, the implementation of green and low-carbon concepts from the earliest design stages, and improvements in full lifecycle services for architects and designers. Both parties also explored ways to optimize specialized curtain wall glass solutions, strengthen project cost management, and improve overall project quality and efficiency.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the visit, the delegation toured NorthGlass’s glass deep-processing manufacturing base, where they observed the company’s intelligent production lines for high-end architectural glass. Representatives also received detailed presentations on NorthGlass’s standardized quality control systems covering the entire production chain.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The committee highly praised NorthGlass’s contribution to landmark curtain wall projects in Shanghai and recognized the company’s growing influence within the architectural glass industry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.gujaratguardianglass.com/in/en/insights/ggl-announces-second-float-and-wet-coater-lines-in-ankleshwar-india" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Gujarat Guardian Limited</a> (GGL), the joint venture between Guardian Industries and Modi Rubber Limited, has officially begun construction on a second float glass line and a new wet coating facility at its Ankleshwar manufacturing site in Gujarat, India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The expansion, scheduled for completion by mid-2028 (subject to project execution timelines), represents a significant capacity and technology upgrade aimed at meeting accelerating demand for architectural and value-added glass across India’s construction and infrastructure sectors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new air-fuel fired float line will add 1,000 metric tons per day of production capacity. It is designed to manufacture a broader portfolio of float glass, including multiple thickness ranges and large-format sheets intended for high-performance façade systems. The upgraded line is also expected to improve glass yield efficiency, reducing wastage during downstream processing for processors and façade contractors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In parallel, GGL will install a wet coater with an annual capacity of 72,000 metric tons. The facility will support advanced mirror and coated glass production, incorporating both single and double paint coating technology. The system will be fully automated, including robotic handling, automated packing lines, and integrated logistics infrastructure to improve throughput consistency and reduce manual variation in finishing quality.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once operational, the Ankleshwar site will function as a fully integrated production hub for float glass, mirror products, and value-added coated solutions. The consolidation of multiple production stages in one location is expected to enhance supply chain reliability and shorten lead times for customers across India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speaking on the development, Guus Boekhoudt, Executive Vice President of Guardian Glass, emphasized that the investment combines capacity expansion with process modernization, strengthening local supply security while supporting advanced façade and glazing applications.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The facility will also produce GGL’s established product lines, including MODIGUARD<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, SunGuard<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, ClimaGuard<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, and ShowerGuard<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, reinforcing its position in India’s premium architectural glass market.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Saudi Arabia is once again positioning itself at the center of global architectural ambition with the proposed Rise Tower, a 2,000-meter megatall skyscraper planned for the northern outskirts of Riyadh. Envisioned as the centerpiece of the larger North Pole District development near King Khalid International Airport, the project represents one of the most ambitious architectural and engineering concepts ever proposed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and reportedly designed by F<strong>oster + Partners</strong>, the Rise Tower is intended to surpass all existing skyscrapers in both height and technological complexity. If realized, the structure would rise to approximately 6,562 feet, nearly twice the height of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, fundamentally redefining the limits of vertical construction.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tower is planned as a fully integrated mixed-use vertical city, combining luxury residences, premium office spaces, five-star hospitality, retail environments, fine dining destinations, cultural venues, observation decks, and entertainment facilities within a single structure. Rather than functioning solely as a skyscraper, the project is conceived as a self-sustaining urban ecosystem.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the project’s defining characteristics is its sustainability agenda. Current concepts indicate the integration of photovoltaic façade systems, embedded wind turbines, greywater recycling infrastructure, and AI-driven energy management systems designed to support net-zero operational ambitions. In Riyadh’s extreme desert climate, the building is also expected to incorporate advanced passive cooling strategies, solar shading technologies, and high-performance façade engineering to reduce thermal loads and energy consumption.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the project also presents unprecedented technical challenges. At a height of 2 kilometers, conventional structural systems, elevator technologies, and wind-resistance strategies become insufficient. Engineers would need to address complex aerodynamic forces, structural sway, pressure variations, and vertical transportation systems on a scale never before attempted. Experts anticipate the tower would require multiple sky lobbies, segmented structural zones, and entirely new approaches to high-altitude building performance.</p>

Nevertheless, no formal groundbreaking ceremony or final construction contracts have yet been publicly confirmed, leading many industry observers to approach the timeline cautiously.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond the tower itself, the broader North Pole District is expected to cover approximately 306 square kilometers, forming a next-generation smart city development focused on technology, mobility, finance, tourism, and innovation. The scale and ambition of the district align with Saudi Arabia’s wider Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the national economy while establishing the Kingdom as a global center for design, infrastructure, and future urbanism.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.tskg-hd.com/en/news/detail/20260406_newsrelease.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">TOYO GLASS</a> has officially begun full-scale operation of a new large-scale glass melting furnace at its Kashiwa plant in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, marking a significant step forward in sustainable glass production.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The furnace, which commenced operations on March 31, 2026, utilises an advanced oxygen combustion method, replacing traditional air-based combustion with high-concentration oxygen. This innovation eliminates nitrogen from the combustion process, significantly improving heat transfer efficiency during glass melting. As a result, the company expects to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 20% per furnace while maintaining the same production capacity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This development is particularly notable as, according to TOYO GLASS, it represents the first implementation in Japan of an oxygen combustion system in a glass bottle furnace with a production capacity exceeding 200 tonnes per day. The system also removes the need for conventional heat storage chambers that rely on large volumes of heat-retaining bricks, further enhancing operational efficiency.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The initiative, launched in May 2024, took nearly two years to complete, including design, construction, and system integration. Oxygen used in the process is stored in liquid form, vaporised, and then supplied directly to the furnace.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, TOYO GLASS continues to prioritise environmental responsibility. This project reflects broader industry efforts to address the high energy demands of glass production and reduce carbon emissions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China Glass 2026 officially opens today, April 7, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, marking the start of one of the most significant global events in the glass industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Running from April 7–10, this 35th edition brings together leading manufacturers, suppliers, and innovators from across the world. Recognised as a key international platform, the exhibition covers the entire glass industry chain, including production technologies, processing equipment, and advanced applications.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year’s event spans approximately 90,000 square metres across seven exhibition halls, highlighting its scale and importance. It is expected to host hundreds of exhibitors from over 30 countries, showcasing innovations in areas such as smart manufacturing, energy-efficient glass, and automation technologies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China Glass has long been considered a “barometer” of the global glass industry, highlighting emerging trends and fostering international collaboration. As the exhibition approaches its 40th anniversary, the 2026 edition further reinforces its role as a strategic hub for technological exchange and business development.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA)</em> has announced that it may take up to 12 months to fully restore aluminium production at its Al Taweelah site, following damage from an <strong>Iranian missile and drone strike</strong> in the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The attack forced a complete evacuation and emergency shutdown of the smelter, casthouse, power plant, alumina refinery, and recycling plant. EGA said resuming operations will require extensive repairs and a step-by-step restoration of reduction cells, the core units for aluminium production.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While primary aluminium output may take a year to fully restart, the <strong>Al Taweelah alumina refinery</strong> and <strong>recycling plant</strong> could resume limited production sooner, depending on the final assessment of the damage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Al Taweelah smelter produced <strong>1.6 million tonnes of cast aluminium in 2025</strong>, while the alumina refinery produced <strong>2.4 million tonnes</strong>, meeting <strong>46% of EGA’s total alumina needs</strong>. The recycling plant has an annual capacity of <strong>185,000 tonnes</strong>. Despite the shutdown, EGA maintains substantial metal stocks both in the UAE and overseas, helping to mitigate immediate supply disruptions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">EGA CEO <em>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban</em> condemned the attack and expressed relief that no life-threatening injuries occurred:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We are deeply disturbed by this attack on our people, who come from more than 40 nations. Those hurt are recovering well.</p>
