SCHOTT has introduced a new range of assembled optical protective windows designed for defence and security applications, expanding its capabilities in precision optics and military-grade protective systems. The company said the new assemblies are developed to protect sensitive optical and electro-optical equipment used in surveillance, targeting, infrared, and stabilised periscope systems operating in harsh environments.

The protective windows are manufactured through SCHOTT’s vertically integrated production chain, which combines continuous optical glass melting, precision polishing, advanced coating technologies, and optomechanical integration within a single controlled process. This approach allows the company to deliver fully assembled solutions while reducing dependence on fragmented supply chains for critical defence components.

One of the recent projects supporting the launch involved a collaboration between SCHOTT and HENSOLDT for the development of zinc sulphide (ZnS) protective windows for armoured vehicle periscope systems. The ZnS-based assemblies were designed to achieve high transmission across visible and infrared wavelengths while maintaining strong resistance to abrasion, environmental exposure, and mechanical stress.

According to SCHOTT, the windows serve as the first protective barrier for critical sensor systems, shielding them from dust, sand, rocks, humidity, debris, and pressure-related damage. Durable anti-reflective coatings are applied to maintain optical transmission and improve scratch resistance even after exposure to abrasion, salt fog, and demanding field conditions.

Each unit undergoes pressure and quality assurance testing according to military standards, supporting reliable long-term performance in mission-critical defence applications across land, sea, air, and space sectors.
