Fire-Resistant Promat SYSTEMGLAS® Elevates Aesthetics and Safety in Refurbished Window at Scotland’s National Museum of Rural Life
Scotland’s National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride has undergone a transformative refurbishment, with Promat SYSTEMGLAS® taking center stage in the replacement of a significant multi-pane window. The nearly seven-meter-wide and one-meter-tall viewing window not only contributes to enhanced aesthetics and acoustics but also plays a crucial role in optimizing fire safety within the museum’s premises, operated by National Museums Scotland.
Distinguished as a museum, historic farmhouse, and a working farm, the National Museum of Rural Life delves into Scotland’s rural history, showcasing an extensive collection of tractors, combine harvesters, and farming machinery. The Georgian farmhouse, once home to Lanarkshire’s Reid family for ten generations, stands as a living testament to the 1950s. The refurbishment, conducted in collaboration with Hoskins Architects, entrusted Promat UK with the task of developing a fire-rated solution for a strategically placed window in the main exhibition hall, demanding EI (integrity and insulation) protection for 60 minutes.
The chosen timber frame SYSTEMGLAS Ligna EI60 system, featuring Promat Promaseal-PL® Strip for perimeter protection, aligns seamlessly with the fire strategy. The three-vertical mullions split the window, incorporating Promat F1 glass with fire test certification suitable for landscape orientation. This results in an impressive EI60 fire rating, coupled with UV stability and a robust acoustic rating of 45dBrw.
Rated Solutions, a recommended installer by Promat SYSTEMGLAS, took charge of the flawless window installation. As part of the project, a Promat timber fire-rated door and over panel were added to the cafeteria area, ensuring a comprehensive approach to fire safety. With a clear and traceable supply chain and adherence to Promat UK’s 360-degree ‘wheel of assurance,’ a certificate of conformity was issued, providing additional peace of mind for both building staff and visitors.
This triumph marks another successful SYSTEMGLAS installation by Rated Solutions, showcasing their expertise in fire-resistant glazing projects, including the recent refurbishment of the Victorian Market in Inverness.
Fodos Joannides “Joe” from Rated Solutions expressed pride in their involvement, stating, “This was another interesting SYSTEMGLAS project that we were proud to be involved with given the unique nature of this museum. The Ligna system, as with all the versions in the SYSTEMGLAS range, is excellent to work with, giving clients finished windows and doors that tick all the boxes.”
Beyond the Ligna timber frame system, Promat SYSTEMGLAS offers architects versatility in creating fire-resistant glass screens, doors, and various glazing elements, providing options for steel frames or concealed frames to achieve a virtually frameless appearance.
