Recycling Milestone: GLASS4GOOD™ Program in Waco, Texas, Surpasses 2022 Glass Recycling Totals in Just Eight Months

In a remarkable achievement, the GLASS4GOOD™ program, launched by O-I in collaboration with Keep Waco Beautiful, the City of Waco, and Pernod Ricard, has shattered glass recycling records in Waco, Texas. In a mere eight months since its inception in January 2023, this innovative initiative has outstripped the total glass recycling figures for the entire year of 2022, demonstrating the power of community-driven sustainability.

A Community United for Glass Recycling

Carole Fergusson, the Executive Director of Keep Waco Beautiful, expressed her delight, stating, “Since launching in January 2023, we have seen civic engagement surrounding glass recycling skyrocket. This program is proof that if we create the solution to accessible recycling, our community will support it. Since the initial launch, we have more than surpassed our total 2022 glass recycling weights and have been able to engage with the general public on the necessary education about how glass recycling is one of the best economical recycling industries.”

Capturing the Glass Wave

The GLASS4GOOD™ program commenced on January 19th and has since collected a staggering 194.46 tonnes of glass, surpassing Waco’s entire 2022 total by over 50 tonnes. Notably, this recycled glass finds its purpose in crafting new glass bottles at O-I’s Waco plant, further fueling the cycle of sustainability.

Supporting the Community, One Ton at a Time

But the impact doesn’t stop there. This program is not only recycling glass but also giving back to the community. The GLASS4GOOD™ initiative calculates the amount of glass collected each quarter and donates per ton to the United Way of Waco-McLennan County. In just the first two quarters of operation, O-I has contributed over USD 6,000 to support the local community through the United Way.

Expanding Access for Everyone

Currently, Waco residents have access to four glass recycling bins. Looking forward, the city aims to make glass recycling even more convenient by adding more drop-off bins in the coming years, reinforcing their commitment to a sustainable future.

Empowering Communities Through Glass Recycling

Glass recycling, especially in North America, is a multifaceted challenge. However, the GLASS4GOOD™ program exemplifies O-I’s dedication to making glass recycling accessible in the communities they serve, fostering meaningful partnerships with municipalities, communities, and customers alike. Through initiatives like these, O-I continues to pave the way for more sustainable and eco-conscious communities across the nation.
