In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, O-I Glass, the world’s largest container glass manufacturer, introduces Estampe, the eco-designed 75 cl wine bottle validated for its low carbon footprint by the renowned Carbon Trust.

The global wine industry faces a pressing challenge to curtail its carbon footprint, prompting O-I Glass, the leading container glass manufacturer, to channel its research and development efforts towards achieving significant decarbonization. The company has now revealed Estampe, a groundbreaking 75 cl wine bottle that not only meets but exceeds sustainability standards.

Estampe stands out with a remarkable carbon footprint of 249g of CO2 equivalent, marking a 25% reduction compared to conventional 500g bottles. This achievement is attributed to the bottle’s weight of 390g and its use of 82% recycled glass, demonstrating O-I Glass’s commitment to incorporating environmentally friendly practices into its manufacturing processes.

What sets Estampe apart is its validation by the Carbon Trust, a prestigious climate consultancy organization. This endorsement ensures that the eco-friendly design of the bottle aligns with the highest standards of sustainability and carbon neutrality. The validation provides both the wine industry and consumers with confidence in choosing a product that actively contributes to environmental conservation.

Moreover, the potential for further optimization is evident in Estampe’s design. The dematerialization of the overcapping capsule, the adoption of a cork stopper, and the use of a paper label offer additional avenues to minimize environmental impact. These options present an exciting prospect for winegrowers and bottlers seeking comprehensive solutions to enhance their sustainability practices.

In line with O-I Glass’s commitment to environmental stewardship, any residual carbon footprint from the Estampe bottle is offset through strategic initiatives. This includes the planting of orchards in France and the financial support of a reforestation project in Brazil. These efforts underscore the company’s dedication to not only reduce its own impact but also contribute positively to global ecological initiatives.

The Estampe bottle transcends functionality and environmental consciousness with its modern and attractive design. Consumer feedback reveals an overwhelming 84% preference for the bottle’s shape, demonstrating that sustainable choices can align seamlessly with consumer preferences. Interestingly, the Estampe bottle defies traditional categorization, neither Burgundian nor Bordeaux, yet it captures consumer preference in 72% of cases.

Walter Ferrer, General Manager France/Spain at O-I Glass, expressed enthusiasm about Estampe’s reception, stating, “Perfectly in line with the demands of winegrowers and bottlers, Estampe offers a packaging solution expected by the market and is already giving rise to the first sales.”

As O-I Glass looks ahead, there are plans to gauge market demand and potentially host additional courses to further promote sustainable practices. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions Estampe as a transformative solution in the ever-evolving landscape of eco-conscious packaging.
