Next-Generation IR-Reflective Interlayer Enhances Comfort and Efficiency in EV Panoramic Sunroofs

Eastman Chemical Company has introduced Saflex™ Evoca™ XIR.SR, a next-generation infrared (IR)-reflective interlayer engineered specifically for panoramic sunroofs in electric vehicles (EVs). Building on more than three decades of Saflex XIR technology, this new solution is designed to enhance passenger comfort while supporting energy efficiency in modern EV design.

As vehicle architecture evolves, especially in EVs where seating positions are often closer to expansive glass roofs, managing solar heat gain becomes increasingly critical. Saflex Evoca XIR.SR addresses this challenge by reflecting infrared radiation, effectively lowering total solar energy transmittance (TTS). This helps maintain cooler cabin temperatures, reducing reliance on air conditioning systems and potentially improving battery efficiency and driving range.

A key differentiator of Evoca XIR.SR is its neutral, angle-stable reflected color. Unlike traditional metal-coated glass, which can produce a noticeable blue hue, this interlayer delivers a consistent neutral-gray appearance across different viewing angles. This not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also gives automotive designers greater flexibility in balancing daylight transmission, glare control, and thermal performance.

The interlayer also maintains high optical clarity and minimizes common defects such as wrinkling or “orange peel” effects, ensuring a premium finish suitable for high-end automotive applications. Its compatibility with various glass configurations allows manufacturers to tailor performance characteristics such as visible light transmission and haze, aligning with specific design and functional requirements.

In addition to performance benefits, Evoca XIR.SR offers practical manufacturing advantages. It provides a viable alternative in cases where metal-coated glass may not be feasible, supporting supply chain flexibility while still meeting stringent OEM standards.

As part of the broader Saflex Evoca portfolio, this innovation underscores Eastman’s continued focus on advancing materials that improve comfort, efficiency, and design in the rapidly evolving EV market.
