National Aviary’s Wetlands Habitat Wins Top Architectural Award
The National Aviary’s Wetlands habitat has won the prestigious Prix Lumières award for Best Commercial Institutional Building from the Association de vitrerie et fenestration du Quebec (AVFQ). The award recognizes the innovative use of glass in the renovated habitat, which provides both the birds and guests with the perfect ambiance and aesthetics.
Unveiled in the fall of 2022, the renovated Wetlands habitat features over 20,000 square feet of Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass donated by Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG Glass), a long-standing partner and supporter of the Aviary. The renovation project included a large bird-friendly component using AviProtek® glass from Walker Glass, which has an acid-etched pattern on the exterior surface that maximizes glass visibility for birds and helps prevent collisions. Walker also applied a full-surface etched finish to the standard Starphire® glass used on the project.
Vitro’s relationship with the Aviary is deep-rooted, as the company has also donated glass for renovations to the Tropical Rainforest and The Garden Room, both of which feature bird-safe acid-etched finishes from Walker.
