ML System S.A. will deliver its PhotonWall photovoltaic cladding technology for a new 55-story skyscraper in New York, marking the tallest building application of the company’s façade solution to date. The approximately 200-metre-high tower will feature 2,600 m² of photovoltaic façade panels, expanding ML System’s portfolio of high-rise BIPV projects.
The PhotonWall system will combine architectural functionality with renewable energy generation, acting as an integrated building envelope while producing approximately 102 MWh of clean electricity annually. The solution is designed to support modern commercial buildings in reducing operational emissions while maintaining the aesthetic requirements of contemporary urban architecture.
The project joins ML System’s previous high-rise implementations, including photovoltaic façade installations in Vienna (175 m) and Oslo (108 m), further demonstrating the scalability of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology for large-scale developments.
The project also responds to growing demand for low-carbon construction solutions, particularly in markets affected by stricter emissions regulations such as New York City’s Local Law 97, which introduces carbon emission limits for large buildings.
According to Zev Laine, founder and CEO of Helios Facade LLC, the project highlights a new generation of façade systems where building envelopes can generate renewable energy while helping owners meet sustainability targets. The New York skyscraper is expected to become the first of several projects where photovoltaic façades contribute to offsetting building costs through energy production.
