Transforming Spaces: Columbia University’s Business School Buildings
In a collaboration between renowned American architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and FXCollaborative, Columbia University’s business school in New York has witnessed the birth of two extraordinary buildings that redefine the landscape of education. The architectural design boasts a unique appearance, characterized by transparency and open communication, leaving an indelible impact on both the interior and the surrounding neighborhood.
BGT Bischoff Glastechnik: An Integral Element
Playing a pivotal role in shaping the distinct character of these university buildings, BGT Bischoff Glastechnik, a part of the esteemed Swiss glass manufacturer Glas Trösch, contributed 12,700 square meters of insulating glass. Notably, the company also supplied the individual components for the façade glass on the upper floors. Leveraging a combination of innovative techniques, BGT Bischoff Glastechnik ensured that the areas appearing opaque from the exterior, spanning 7,600 square meters, were adorned with a ceramic white paint fired into the surface during the tempering process. The manufacturing process presented a technical challenge as the weather-resistant outer panes, measuring 23.52 millimeters in total thickness, required a fixed-size coating prior to lamination. Additionally, the remaining 5,100 square meters were meticulously screen printed around the edges. Complementing this intricate design, another 12,700 square meters of unprinted laminated safety glass form the inner panes of the insulating glass units, seamlessly covering the façade’s entirety.

The architectural marvels at Columbia University’s business school embody a perfect synthesis of design, functionality, and sustainability. These buildings strive for a Gold LEED v3 certification, emphasizing their commitment to environmental stewardship. The choice of partially printed insulating glass surfaces plays a crucial role in achieving this goal. By strategically incorporating opaque areas into the façades, excessive interior heating is effectively prevented, ensuring energy efficiency and maintaining a comfortable environment for occupants.
