Gerresheimer Expands Syringe Production Capacity in Skopje with €100 Million Investment

Gerresheimer, a leading global supplier of drug delivery systems and primary packaging, is significantly expanding its production capabilities in Skopje, North Macedonia.

The company is investing over €100 million in a new 7,600 square meter production hall dedicated to the manufacturing of glass syringes. This expansion represents a key component of Gerresheimer’s global strategy to meet the growing demand for drug delivery systems.

The new facility, roughly the size of a soccer field, will house state-of-the-art precision glass forming lines, developed and manufactured by Gerresheimer itself, alongside specialized assembly and ready-to-fill lines. It incorporates GMP Class C and D clean rooms, ensuring the highest standards of quality and hygiene are maintained throughout the production process. This strategic investment will nearly double the Skopje site’s footprint, bringing the total area to over 22,000 square meters.

This expansion builds upon Gerresheimer’s existing presence in Skopje, where the company has been producing drug delivery systems and medical products from plastic since 2019. The new hall will allow for the efficient production of integrated solutions, combining both plastic and glass components at a single location. This streamlined approach optimizes logistics and offers customers the convenience of receiving fully assembled, ready-to-fill syringe systems in diverse configurations.

The impact on employment will be substantial. Gerresheimer plans to increase its workforce in Skopje from approximately 250 to 500 employees over the next three to five years. This significant job creation highlights the company’s commitment to the region and the North Macedonian economy.

“Combining production capacities for plastic and glass at one location for the efficient production of integrated solutions for the pharma industry is a further step in the implementation of our corporate strategy formula g,” stated Dietmar Siemssen, CEO of Gerresheimer AG. “As a systems and solutions provider, our customers receive individually tailored, fully integrated solutions. In the future, for example, we will also supply ready-to-fill syringe systems from Skopje.”

The Skopje site’s strategic location and the availability of an additional 100,000 square meters of land on the property provide significant potential for future growth and expansion. This investment underscores Gerresheimer’s commitment to meeting the global demand for high-quality syringes, complementing its existing production facilities in Bünde, Germany, and Querétaro, Mexico. The company is strategically concentrating its syringe production across these three key locations to ensure efficient and reliable supply to its customers worldwide.
