Gehry Partners has revealed the design for Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi (House of the Arts), a major new performing arts destination planned for Saadiyat Island. Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the venue is scheduled to open in 2030, further expanding the emirate’s internationally recognized cultural district.
Located adjacent to the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, also designed by Gehry Partners, the new development will introduce a dedicated venue for opera, theatre, ballet, orchestral performances, jazz and multidisciplinary cultural events. The project complements neighbouring institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, the forthcoming Zayed National Museum and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.

The architecture is defined by a series of flowing, sculptural forms that resemble fabric suspended in motion. While the final construction materials have not yet been disclosed, the design suggests the use of advanced free-form façade technologies, likely incorporating high-performance composite cladding systems supported by a structural steel framework. Extensive glazed façades are also planned to provide visual connections between interior public spaces and the surrounding waterfront district.

At the heart of the complex will be a 2,000-seat multipurpose performance hall equipped with an orchestra pit capable of accommodating 120 musicians, allowing the venue to host large-scale opera productions, symphony concerts and theatrical performances. Additional facilities include a 3,500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, a 400-seat studio theatre, and a 250-seat jazz venue, bringing the total audience capacity to more than 6,000 seats across the development.
Beyond its performance spaces, Dar al Funoon will incorporate restaurants, retail outlets, event areas and a rooftop terrace designed to activate the complex throughout the year. The institution is expected to host international productions alongside artist residencies, workshops, educational initiatives and cultural collaborations.
