Nashville International Airport Concourse D Improves Passenger Comfort with Electrochromic Glass

As part of the BNA Vision expansion program, Nashville International Airport (BNA) has equipped its new Concourse D with SageGlass electrochromic glazing from Saint-Gobain, improving passenger comfort while enhancing the building’s environmental performance.

The concourse spans more than 115,000 square feet (approximately 10,680 m²) and features high ceilings with a large west-facing glazed façade. This orientation exposes the terminal to intense afternoon sunlight, creating challenges related to glare and solar heat gain. Rather than relying on conventional blinds or fixed shading systems, the design team specified SageGlass smart glass to dynamically manage daylight throughout the day.

The electrochromic glazing automatically adjusts its tint according to changing sunlight conditions, reducing glare and limiting heat entering the building while preserving natural daylight and unobstructed exterior views. The system creates a more comfortable environment for passengers, airport staff and retail tenants without sacrificing transparency.

According to airport officials, the west-facing orientation of Concourse D made dynamic glazing an effective solution for balancing daylight, thermal comfort and architectural openness.

In addition to improving occupant comfort, the smart façade contributes to lower cooling loads by reducing solar heat gain, supporting the airport’s sustainability objectives. The performance of the glazing system helped Concourse D achieve LEED Silver certification, demonstrating how adaptive glass technologies can improve both energy efficiency and the passenger experience in modern airport terminals.
