FEVE Asserts its Position on the Proposal for Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

As discussions around the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) unfold, FEVE, representing the container glass industry, closely examines the policy recommendations put forth in the paper “Reinventing Glass” by Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) and RELOOP.

Rejecting Misconceptions about Glass

FEVE acknowledges areas of agreement with Zero Waste Europe/RELOOP while firmly refuting the notion that glass would receive a “free pass” under the current PPWR plans. The container glass industry is already embarking on a climate-neutral revolution, positioning itself as a true circular model for packaging that aligns with the EU’s vision of a circular economy. With a commitment to revolutionize glass production to meet the demands of a circular and climate-neutral economy by 2050, the industry demonstrates its dedication to sustainable transformation.

Addressing Misleading Claims

ZWE/RELOOP’s assertion regarding the “incompatibility of single-use glass with the climate agenda” is not only inaccurate but also contradictory to EU law. Their claim is based on a ZWE-commissioned study by Eunomia on the “Decarbonisation of Single Use Beverage Packaging,” which wrongly assumes that decarbonisation is optional for industries. In reality, decarbonisation is a mandatory requirement for all industries operating within the EU. FEVE refutes these claims and provides a comprehensive technical analysis to debunk any partial, unchecked, and inaccurate assumptions.
