EUROPEAN CONTAINER GLASS INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT’S ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE VOTE

The European container glass industry, represented by FEVE, has expressed both appreciation and concern following the European Parliament’s Environment (ENVI) Committee vote amending the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). While welcoming the drive for full packaging circularity, the industry remains deeply apprehensive about the potential impact on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for packaging designs.

PROTECTING CREATIVITY AND BRAND IDENTITY

Adeline Farrelly, Secretary General of FEVE, voiced concerns, stating, “We fear this will result in standardized packaging and the gradual demise of brand differentiation.” While FEVE supports the reduction targets to combat heavier but less recyclable materials, the organization stresses the importance of protecting creative designs and iconic shapes that reflect cultural heritage and add significant economic value to products in the European market.

SUPPORTING RECYCLABILITY AND SEPARATE COLLECTION

FEVE acknowledges the importance of recyclability, supporting the introduction of recyclability performance grades that reward packaging designed for multiple recycling cycles. The industry emphasizes the need for separate collection and sorting systems, essential for high-quality recycling processes. FEVE supports the mandatory 90 percent collection for recycling target, emphasizing the significance of robust collection mechanisms for sustainable packaging solutions.
