Evangelos Mytilineos, the esteemed Chairman and CEO of METLEN Energy & Metals, has been re-elected as the President of Eurometaux, Europe’s leading association representing the non-ferrous metals industry.
This reappointment, confirmed during the association’s recent General Assembly, marks the beginning of his second consecutive two-year term. His leadership comes at a time of pivotal significance for the European metals sector, which is currently grappling with a unique blend of challenges and opportunities.
Guy Thiran, the Director General of Eurometaux, expressed the association’s commitment to continue operating under Mr. Mytilineos’ guidance, particularly during this crucial juncture. He remarked, “The essential role of metals in advancing Europe’s green and digital transitions has never been clearer.” Under Mr. Mytilineos’ stewardship, Eurometaux has significantly influenced Europe’s industrial landscape, solidifying its role as a frontrunner in shaping the EU’s policy agenda—an agenda characterized by both remarkable opportunities and pressing challenges.
During his first term, Mr. Mytilineos played a vital role in the development of the Critical Raw Materials Act, emphasizing the significance of metals in promoting Europe’s strategic autonomy. The upcoming period will see Eurometaux focusing on the implementation of this Act, which is crucial for ensuring that the European metals industry can adequately support the escalating demand for raw materials essential to the growth of clean energy technologies.
In his remarks following his re-election, Mr. Mytilineos stated, “It is an honor to continue serving as President of Eurometaux. The past two years have seen our industry confront extraordinary challenges, from surging energy prices to supply chain disruptions. However, we have also made significant strides, particularly with the adoption of the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act.” He emphasized that metals are central to Europe’s future industrial strategy and urged lawmakers to take decisive action that will enable metals producers to thrive in a competitive and sustainable environment.
Looking ahead, Eurometaux intends to collaborate closely with policymakers both in Brussels and within EU Member States to shape the forthcoming Clean Industrial Deal. A primary focus will be the successful execution of the Critical Raw Materials Act to ensure that targeted goals are met. Key priorities will involve securing a globally competitive energy supply for the industry and reforming Europe’s chemicals legislation (REACH), the EU’s Emissions Trading System, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Additionally, modernizing the EU’s new due diligence policies and advancing the sustainable products framework will also be essential components of their agenda.
As he embarks on this renewed term, Mr. Mytilineos remains committed to ensuring that Europe’s metals sector navigates the evolving industrial landscape adeptly, leveraging both the opportunities presented and the challenges faced. Under his governance, the future looks promising for Eurometaux and the broader non-ferrous metals industry in Europe, as they work collectively toward a sustainable and competitive environment.
