ASTM International’s glass and glass products committee is developing a new specification designed to establish clearer quality and approval guidelines for decorative enamels applied to flat glass.
The proposed standard expands on ASTM C1048-18, which currently addresses enamel coatings on spandrel glass. The new guidance would also cover heat-treated and flat glass used in decorative applications.
According to ASTM member Michael Saroka of Goldray Glass, the industry has previously relied on C1048, particularly Condition B, because no dedicated standard existed for decorative glass. However, its viewing conditions and tolerances were not always suitable for these products.
The proposed specification aims to address this gap by introducing requirements specifically suited to decorative enamel applications, helping manufacturers, fabricators and customers establish more consistent expectations for appearance and quality.
