Architecture Meets Technology: Hyundai’s New R&D Centre in Rüsselsheim

Hyundai Motor Europe has expanded its Rüsselsheim campus with a cutting-edge research facility, the Square Campus, a 25,000 m² extension of its existing “Round Campus” (HMETC). Designed as a technologically advanced and energy-optimized workspace, the new campus strengthens Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and sustainable building design.

The Square Campus comprises two light-filled, flexible buildings totaling around 25,000 m² of usable space. With a clear, minimalist design language, the buildings merge functionality with architectural precision. HPP Architekten GmbH led the design, while Bilfinger Engineering & Maintenance GmbH oversaw the implementation planning.

A standout feature is the building envelope, combining industrial aesthetics with high-performance materials. FRENER & REIFER supplied 8,200 m² of rear-ventilated sheet metal façade, characterized by an engineering-inspired, industrial look. This is complemented by 1,660 m² of a specially developed double façade, consisting of a thermal glass façade protected by impact panes, and 370 m² of mullion-transom façade.

High-performance glazing plays a central role in the Square Campus’ design. TVITEC System Glass provided lenses including COOL-LITE® SKN 183, COOL-LITE® SKN 183 II, and curved COOL-LITE® XTR 61-29, delivering thermal insulation, selective sun protection, and abundant natural light throughout the interiors. Curved glass elements were manufactured by Doering Berlin, part of the CLIMAplusSECURIT-Die Flachglas-Experten network.

Sustainability and safety were key considerations. The outer laminated safety glass incorporates Saflex FlySafe 3D PVB film from Eastman, offering effective bird protection without compromising transparency or daylight access.
