Hydro and Mercedes-Benz have expanded their long-term partnership to accelerate the adoption of recycled and low-carbon aluminium across Europe, supporting the automotive industry’s transition to more sustainable vehicle production.
As part of the collaboration, Mercedes-Benz will become the first automotive manufacturer in Europe to integrate Hydro Circal into series production for the next generation of its large electric vehicles. Hydro Circal is a premium recycled aluminium made with at least 75% post-consumer scrap, representing a significant increase compared with the current industry standard of around 25% recycled content.
The material is produced by recovering aluminium from end-of-life vehicles, buildings, and infrastructure before recycling it into new automotive components. By keeping aluminium in continuous circulation, the process reduces demand for virgin raw materials while significantly lowering associated carbon emissions.
The partnership also strengthens the companies’ collaboration on Hydro Reduxa, Hydro’s low-carbon primary aluminium produced using renewable energy. Mercedes-Benz will source additional volumes of Hydro Reduxa for future vehicle production, while both companies have committed to further reducing the material’s carbon footprint over time.
Eivind Kallevik, President and CEO of Hydro, said the automotive sector requires materials that reduce emissions without compromising quality, safety, or performance. He added that combining Hydro Circal with Hydro Reduxa enables lower-carbon vehicles while creating more resilient and competitive supply chains.
