Alba Upgrades Five Auxiliary Cranes to Strengthen Smelter Operations in Bahrain

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters, has awarded Konecranes a contract to modernise five auxiliary cranes at its smelter complex in Bahrain. Equipment delivery is scheduled for the end of 2026, while installation will begin in early 2027 as part of Alba’s ongoing investment in operational reliability and production safety.

The modernisation project focuses on the auxiliary cranes operating in Alba’s casthouse and mould shop, where molten aluminium is transformed into finished products. These cranes are essential for maintaining material flow and supporting uninterrupted production in areas where continuous operation is critical.

Under the contract, Konecranes will upgrade the hoist and trolley systems of all five cranes to a heavy-duty configuration. The new trolley units will feature an M8 duty class rating, designed for demanding industrial environments with frequent lifting cycles and intensive daily use. The project also includes upgraded electrical systems and the addition of an extra electrical drum brake, providing an additional layer of operational safety while improving equipment reliability.

Imtiaz Ismail, Sales Manager, Industrial Services at Konecranes, said the auxiliary cranes play a vital role in Alba’s production processes. He noted that upgrading them to a heavy-duty configuration will enhance reliability and help ensure safe, continuous operations.
