Located at Am Stadtpark 3, Vienna, Die Welle (“The Wave”) is a striking office building that exemplifies innovative architectural design in a dense urban context. Designed by renowned Austrian architect Hans Hollein, it serves as an extension to the Raiffeisen Zentralbank headquarters, transforming a small and irregularly shaped plot into a visually compelling and functional workspace. Completed in 2008, the building demonstrates how creativity and technical expertise can overcome site constraints to produce an iconic city landmark.
Die Welle’s most striking feature is its S-shaped form, which appears to float above the street. This design responds directly to the building’s narrow, leftover plot between the main bank building and its urban surroundings. The elevated structure, positioned on a table-like substructure, allows for traffic and pedestrian circulation below, creating a sense of openness while maximizing usable office space. The building’s fluid shape also enhances its visual dynamism, making it a standout piece in Vienna’s urban fabric.

Two glazed bridges connect Die Welle to the main Raiffeisen Zentralbank building on the third and seventh floors, integrating the extension seamlessly with the existing headquarters. Its central location next to the Stadtpark positions the building within a historic and cultural context, balancing modernity with sensitivity to the surrounding environment. The design ensures that the building complements its surroundings while maintaining a bold, contemporary character.
Die Welle is clad in Guardian SunGuard® Solar Royal Blue 20 coated glass, giving it a uniform, reflective blue façade that enhances both aesthetics and energy performance. The glass façade was fabricated by petschenig glastec GmbH, ensuring high-quality construction and long-term durability. The choice of materials reinforces the building’s modern character while contributing to a comfortable interior environment for its occupants.

Spanning seven stories, Die Welle provides efficient office spaces while maintaining a distinctive architectural identity. The building is celebrated not only for its bold form and material innovation but also for its thoughtful integration into Vienna’s urban landscape. By transforming a leftover plot into a dynamic office environment, Die Welle demonstrates how architecture can combine functionality, aesthetic appeal, and contextual sensitivity in one cohesive design.
