FGIA Releases New Window Opening Control Devices (WOCDs) Specification

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released AAMA 950-25, Specification for Window Opening Control Devices (WOCDs) Installed on Operable Windows, a new standard aimed at improving window safety. The document provides a method for evaluating windows fitted with WOCDs, mechanisms designed to limit how far a window can open to help prevent accidental falls, especially involving children.

“WOCDs play a key role in window safety,” explained Jason Seals, FGIA Technical Manager for Fenestration Standards and U.S. Industry Affairs.

When correctly designed, tested, and installed, they can significantly reduce fall risks while still allowing full window opening for emergency escape.

The new specification builds on ASTM F2090, which outlines requirements for fall prevention devices with egress release mechanisms, including performance testing, safety information, labeling, and installation. AAMA 950-25 specifically applies to WOCDs used in operable windows that already comply with the AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 (NAFS) standard for windows, doors, and skylights.

Unlike other fall prevention solutions such as guards or screens, these are not included in the scope of this document. The specification covers both factory-installed WOCDs and those provided as field-installation kits by window manufacturers.

AAMA 950-25 is available for purchase through the FGIA online store for $25 for members and $70 for non-members.
