The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released updated versions of two key specifications related to secondary storm products: AAMA 1002-25, Specification for Secondary Storm Products for Windows and Sliding Glass Doors, and AAMA 1102-25, Specification for Side-hinged Secondary Storm Doors. These updated documents, which replace versions last updated in 2011, are now available for purchase in the FGIA online store.
Notably, the naming conventions have been updated to reflect current industry terminology. In previous versions, secondary storm products were referred to as combination storm windows and sliding glass doors or insulating storm products for windows and sliding glass doors.
According to Rich Rinka, FGIA Technical Manager, Fenestration Standards and U.S. Industry Affairs, and staff liaison for the FGIA Secondary Storm Products Task Group, the increased focus on these energy-saving products from both the Department of Energy and manufacturers has led to their inclusion in the scope of the North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS), beginning with the 2011 edition.
AAMA 1002 establishes performance and quality criteria for secondary storm products used with windows and sliding glass doors. Similarly, AAMA 1102 outlines the performance and quality benchmarks for side-hinged secondary storm doors.
These specifications serve a multi-faceted purpose:
- Manufacturers: Can utilize the specifications for testing, rating, and certifying their products to a recognized standard.
- Laboratories: Can leverage the specifications to develop test plans and conduct testing to assess product performance against established criteria.
- Specifiers: Can use the specifications as a valuable resource for product selection and specification.
AAMA 1002-25 and AAMA 1102-25 are available for purchase through the FGIA online store at a discounted member rate of $25 each, or at the non-member price of $70 each.
