Positioned in Tokyo’s Hibiya district as the flagship development of Tokyo Cross Park, NTT Hibiya Tower is conceived as a next-generation high-rise where architectural expression and building intelligence are inseparable. Rising to approximately 230 metres and delivering around 361,000 square metres of mixed-use space, the tower accommodates offices, commercial functions, cultural facilities and hospitality programs within a unified vertical structure.

The architectural identity of the tower is driven by an extensive, continuous glass façade, designed to establish transparency, openness and a strong visual relationship with the surrounding urban fabric and nearby Hibiya Park. Rather than functioning as a conventional curtain wall, the glazed envelope is conceived as a high-performance building skin, supporting daylight optimization while maintaining controlled interior environmental conditions essential for large-scale commercial occupancies.

NTT Hibiya Tower: A High-Performance Glass Façade for a Digitally Adaptive Skyscraper

The façade operates in close coordination with the building’s advanced digital infrastructure, developed around NTT’s IOWN optical communication platform. This system enables real-time data exchange between occupancy monitoring, lighting control and indoor climate systems. As a result, the glazed façade becomes part of an adaptive environmental strategy, supporting efficient energy management and stable indoor comfort without compromising transparency or architectural clarity.

NTT Hibiya Tower intelligent façade ecosystems

From a glass and façade industry standpoint, NTT Hibiya Tower exemplifies the evolution toward intelligent façade ecosystems, where glazing, control systems and digital networks are fully integrated. The project reflects a shift away from static envelopes toward façades that actively contribute to operational efficiency, user comfort and long-term sustainability.

NTT Hibiya Tower: A High-Performance Glass Façade for a Digitally Adaptive Skyscraper

In the context of contemporary high-rise construction, the tower sets a benchmark for digitally orchestrated glass architecture, demonstrating how large-scale transparent façades can perform as responsive interfaces between people, technology and the urban environment, without sacrificing design integrity or environmental responsibility.

Digitally orchestrated glass architecture

NorthGlass has successfully completed the production and installation of ultra-large tempered glass panels for the Guangshang Tower project, marking another significant achievement in oversized architectural glazing. The façade features glass units measuring approximately 23 meters in height, equivalent to a seven-story building, creating one of the most visually striking continuous glass applications in contemporary high-rise construction.

The installation represents far more than a record in dimensions. As glass sizes increase, manufacturing complexity grows exponentially, requiring precise control over optical quality, flatness, stress distribution, and structural performance. For façade engineers and architects, the challenge lies in ensuring that oversized panels maintain exceptional transparency and visual consistency while meeting stringent safety and durability requirements.

Each 23-meter panel extends seamlessly from the lower levels of the tower toward the upper floors, significantly reducing the number of horizontal joints traditionally required in curtain wall systems. The result is a cleaner façade appearance, enhanced daylight penetration, and uninterrupted exterior views that strengthen the visual connection between the building’s interior and its surrounding urban environment.

To achieve the required performance standards, NorthGlass implemented comprehensive quality-control procedures throughout the production process. The manufacturing sequence included careful raw glass selection, high-precision edge processing, optimized tempering, heat-soak testing, and final assembly using SGP-laminated glass technology. SGP interlayers provide enhanced post-breakage performance, greater structural rigidity, and improved resistance to wind loads compared with conventional laminated glass solutions.

Handling, transportation, and installation also required specialized engineering solutions due to the extraordinary size and weight of the units. Maintaining dimensional accuracy throughout every stage was critical to ensuring successful on-site integration.

The Guangshang Tower project demonstrates how advances in glass processing technology continue to redefine the possibilities of modern architecture. By delivering 23-meter tempered glass panels at commercial scale, NorthGlass has expanded the boundaries of façade design, enabling larger, more transparent, and increasingly ambitious building envelopes for the next generation of landmark developments.

The construction pipeline is showing renewed signs of strain, raising concerns for glass and glazing companies that depend on steady project flow. According to the ConstructConnect Project Stress Index (PSI), stress levels rose 4.2% in March, driven largely by a sharp 22.8% increase in project abandonments across nonresidential and multifamily sectors.

Much of this pressure is concentrated in private-sector developments, where rising costs and uncertainty are forcing owners to reconsider or halt projects. A key driver is the ongoing geopolitical tension surrounding the Iran conflict, which continues to disrupt critical global shipping routes and push energy prices higher. These disruptions are having a cascading effect on construction planning and feasibility.

Although the PSI shows a 3.5% year-over-year improvement, short-term volatility remains a serious concern. For glass and glazing firms, delayed or abandoned projects directly impact revenue forecasts, backlog visibility and workforce planning. The inability to confidently predict timelines also complicates material procurement and pricing strategies.

Global supply chains are adding further pressure. The Middle East plays a crucial role in aluminum supply, an essential material in modern construction. With shipments frequently passing through the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing instability in the region is increasing the risk of shortages and price fluctuations.

As a result, companies across the glass and glazing sector may face tighter margins and heightened competition for fewer active projects. Until geopolitical tensions ease and supply chains stabilize, uncertainty is likely to remain a defining factor for the industry.

The upgraded branch moves away from the traditional trade counter model, instead offering a large, immersive display area where customers can view Eurocell’s full range of windows and doors in a realistic, showroom-style setting. The layout is designed to support tradespeople in bringing their own customers in, helping them visualise products on live projects and make more confident purchasing decisions.

Branch manager Paul Ransley said the redesign aims to go beyond a purely transactional service, focusing instead on product understanding, technical support, and hands-on guidance. He noted that the expanded displays allow installers to better evaluate specifications and discuss project requirements with expert staff.

Convenience remains a key focus, with services including 1-hour click-and-collect and free site delivery. Customers can also join Eurocell’s “Power Up” trade scheme, earning reward points on purchases redeemable at major retailers.

Kingspan Group has completed an 881-kilowatt rooftop solar installation at its insulation manufacturing facility in Mendota, reinforcing its long-term decarbonization strategy across North America. The milestone was marked by a ribbon-cutting event held in partnership with REC Solar and Dynamic Energy.

Installed across approximately 50,000 square feet of roof space, the photovoltaic system is designed to generate around 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This production is expected to offset roughly 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, contributing directly to reduced operational carbon intensity at the site.

The Mendota installation represents Kingspan’s third rooftop solar project in North America, following earlier deployments at its facilities in DeLand and Winchester. Together, these projects form part of the company’s global Planet Passionate program, which targets solar photovoltaic deployment across all wholly owned sites and aims to achieve 60% direct renewable energy use by 2030.

The system was developed and installed by Dynamic Energy and is owned and operated by REC Solar under a 25-year power purchase agreement. This structure enables long-term access to renewable electricity while maintaining predictable energy costs and minimizing upfront capital investment.

NSG Group has completed a demonstration trial producing float glass from cover glass recovered from end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) modules, confirming the technical feasibility of closed-loop recycling.

As Japan approaches a wave of PV system decommissioning beyond 2030, the need for effective recycling solutions is increasing. PV cover glass has been particularly difficult to reuse due to its specialised composition and strong encapsulation materials.

For this trial, the glass was recovered using Tokuyama Corporation’s low-temperature thermal decomposition technology at its Hokkaido facility. The extracted material was then introduced into the raw batch at NSG Group’s Chiba Plant float furnace in Ichihara during a controlled manufacturing run.

The trial evaluated both product quality and operational stability, confirming that recycled PV cover glass can be reused under defined conditions without compromising performance. This establishes a viable pathway for horizontal recycling within float glass production.

The process supports reduced consumption of primary raw materials such as silica sand and soda ash, while increasing cullet usage improves furnace efficiency and lowers CO₂ emissions.

Glaston Corporation has announced a change within its Executive Leadership Team, as Riikka Laitasalo, Senior Vice President of People & Culture, prepares to step down from her role. Laitasalo will officially leave the company on April 17, 2026, to pursue new professional opportunities outside the organization.

During her tenure, Laitasalo played a key role in shaping Glaston’s global human resources framework. Her work focused on strengthening HR processes across the group while also advancing initiatives aimed at improving workplace wellbeing, an area that has become increasingly important in today’s evolving work environment.

Following her departure, Glaston has confirmed that it will not initiate a direct replacement for the SVP People & Culture role. Instead, the company will implement a structural shift in how these responsibilities are managed at the group level. Going forward, People & Culture functions will be overseen jointly by the CEO and the General Counsel, reflecting a more integrated leadership approach.

Commenting on the transition, Miika Äppelqvist expressed appreciation for Laitasalo’s contributions:

“I want to thank Riikka for her contribution at Glaston, and especially for developing the global HR processes and the initiatives for workplace wellbeing, and wish her all the best for the future.”

Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) has developed Sonarion, an ultra-thin glass material engineered for speaker diaphragms, the critical component at the heart of acoustic devices.

With a thickness ranging from 25µm to 200µm, Sonarion ranks among the thinnest glass materials in the world, while still meeting the demanding mechanical and acoustic requirements of modern audio systems. Its proprietary glass composition enables a unique combination of lightweight structure and high strength, allowing it to endure intense vibration amplitudes and sound pressure levels without compromising performance.

The name “Sonarion” blends sonar (sound) with Orion, the luminous winter constellation, symbolising clarity, brilliance, and a deep, expansive soundscape.

NEG developed this innovation in collaboration with Glass Acoustic Innovations Technology (GAIT), a Taiwanese specialist in ultra-thin glass processing. By applying advanced 3D forming and specialised chemical strengthening treatments, the material achieves optimised acoustic characteristics.

Compared to traditional diaphragm materials such as paper or metal, Sonarion delivers faster sound response, reduced distortion, and minimal colouration due to its low self-resonance and high internal damping. Its chemically strengthened surface also enhances durability, enabling resistance to heavy bass vibrations and environmental changes such as temperature and humidity.
