Pilkington UK has inaugurated a state-of-the-art rolled glass production line at its historic Greengate Works site in St Helens, marking a major milestone in British glass manufacturing. The project involved a remarkable technical feat, engineers had to breach the side of a live float glass furnace to construct a specialized canal that diverts molten glass to the new line located in an adjacent building. This bold approach enables both float and rolled glass production from a single furnace, a shift that significantly boosts operational efficiency and reduces environmental impact.

Reviving Texture by Pilkington
The new line is dedicated to manufacturing the company’s “Texture by Pilkington” range, a curated collection of 21 patterned and decorative glass designs. Popular in interior architecture, this range balances privacy and aesthetic appeal, catering to designers, specifiers, and homeowners alike. By relocating this production from the nearby Watson Street Works, which ceased operations after two centuries, Pilkington UK centralizes its manufacturing processes at Greengate Works.

Sustainability at the Core
This move is more than a logistical upgrade, it’s a cornerstone of Pilkington UK’s sustainability strategy. Consolidating glass production to a single furnace cuts 15,000 tonnes of CO₂e annually, the equivalent of removing over 8,800 cars from the roads each year. It’s a tangible step toward the company’s ambitious climate targets: a 30% emissions reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

Government-Backed Green Innovation
This transformation was supported by a £3.7 million grant from the UK government’s Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF), which backs industrial decarbonisation initiatives. The funding affirms Pilkington UK’s role not just as a legacy manufacturer but as a pioneer in the future of low-carbon glassmaking.

The future of a glass manufacturing plant in Wigan, UK, is hanging in the balance as Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) initiates a strategic review of its composites business, Electric Glass Fiber UK.

This move casts a shadow over the facility, which produces fiberglass crucial for reinforcing plastics used in wind turbine blades and electric cars – key components in the burgeoning renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors.

NEG cites a “challenging competitive environment” marked by escalating costs for raw materials, energy, and logistics, compounded by a slump in sales, as the driving force behind the review. This perfect storm has significantly impacted the profitability of the UK-based composites arm. The latest financial accounts reveal a stark contrast, showing a loss of £3.47 million in 2023, a significant downturn from the £7.4 million profit recorded in 2022. The company attributes this decline not only to rising operational costs but also to “lower customer demand resulting from competition from Chinese imports.”

The two-month strategic review will explore a range of options for the Electric Glass Fiber business. This includes the potential sale of the business or the formation of strategic partnerships aimed at bolstering its competitive position. The urgency stems from the company’s desire to “recover performance,” suggesting a proactive approach to addressing the current challenges.

However, the possibility of closure looms large should NEG fail to secure a viable partner or buyer. This outcome would represent a significant blow to the local economy in Wigan, potentially resulting in job losses and impacting the supply chain for critical components in the green technology sector.

The situation underscores the pressures facing manufacturers in the UK, particularly those competing in a global market where cost-effectiveness is paramount. The impact of imported goods, coupled with fluctuating energy prices and supply chain disruptions, is clearly taking its toll.

The coming weeks will be crucial as NEG evaluates its options. Stakeholders will be keenly watching for any announcements regarding the future of the Wigan plant and the potential implications for the UK’s manufacturing landscape. The outcome will serve as a bellwether for the broader challenges facing businesses in the region as they navigate an increasingly competitive and volatile economic climate.

The City of London skyline has a new, prominent addition: 8 Bishopsgate, a towering 50-storey skyscraper situated at the bustling intersection of Bishopsgate and Leadenhall Street.

Developed by Stanhope for Mitsubishi Estate London and brought to life through the collaborative design efforts of Arup and Wilkinson Eyre, this 204-meter-high structure is more than just an impressive architectural feat; it’s a testament to sustainable building practices.

8 Bishopsgate doesn’t just aim for the bare minimum; it sets a new standard. The building boasts the highest energy efficiency class, “EPC A,” and has been awarded the prestigious “BREEAM Outstanding” certificate, solidifying its commitment to environmental responsibility. But where does this impressive sustainability come from?

A key element is the integrated use of renewable energy. Photovoltaic panels adorning the roof actively generate sustainable electricity, contributing to the building’s reduced carbon footprint. Furthermore, the incorporation of urban greenery throughout the building, including on expansive roof terraces, not only enhances biodiversity but also provides a more comfortable and inviting workspace for occupants.

However, the real ingenuity lies within the building’s advanced façade. A double-skin active façade, comprised of a specialized steel skeleton, solar control elements, and low-emissivity (low-e) glazing from AGC Interpane Architectural Glass, works in harmony with a light-controlled shading system. This sophisticated system significantly minimizes the building’s reliance on traditional air conditioning, dramatically reducing its overall CO2 footprint. The double-skin construction creates a buffer zone, regulating temperature and minimizing heat gain during warmer months and heat loss during colder ones.

In essence, 8 Bishopsgate is a prime example of how innovative design and advanced technology can come together to create a high-performance, environmentally conscious building. By prioritizing sustainability throughout its design and construction phases, 8 Bishopsgate stands as a forward-thinking model for future developments in the City of London and beyond, proving that impressive architecture and environmental responsibility can indeed go hand in hand. It’s a building that not only dominates the skyline but also represents a significant step towards a more sustainable urban landscape.

The UK glass manufacturer was recognised for its leadership and investment in advancing industry-wide sustainability initiatives, in addition to implementing and supporting its pioneering Glass Forever pre- and post-consumer flat glass recovery and recycling programme.

Glass Forever is a circular economy approach to sustainability, and by collaborating with its customers and partners, Saint-Gobain Glass actively diverts waste glass, known as cullet, from landfill and remanufactures it into high-performance flat galss at a specialised facility in Eggborough.

The Glass Forever programme aims to increase the volume of cullet used in Saint-Gobain Glass’ production and help the company achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Mike Butterick, Marketing Director at Saint-Gobain Glass said: “Glass Forever embodies our dedication to minimising CO2 emissions throughout the lifecycle of the product to help reduce resource consumption, and preserve natural resources through long-term sustainable practices. Supported by our state-of-the-art cullet recycling plant at Eggborough, completed in 2023, this €4.5 million facility transforms waste glass into high-quality, reusable glass, ready for remanufacturing into new high-performance windows. This process significantly reduces our reliance on virgin raw materials, enhances resource efficiency, lowers CO2 emissions, and sets a benchmark for sustainability in the flat glass industry.”

Saint-Gobain Glass’s efforts demonstrate a clear commitment to sustainable innovation and collaboration, establishing the company as a leader in environmentally conscious practices within the glazing sector.

In a bold move towards a greener and more prosperous future, Dave Dalton, the CEO of British Glass, has outlined the industry’s key asks of the new UK government.

With the glass industry manufacturing 3 million tonnes of glass each year, a market worth over £2.2 billion, Dalton underscores the critical importance of collaboration between the industry and policymakers to realize the industry’s 2050 vision.

Dalton emphasizes that the 2050 Vision is achievable through a strategic focus on three pillars: power decarbonization, UK circularity, and futureproof skills. The industry is committed to a transition to net-zero by 2050, which requires improvements in electricity infrastructure across the UK and addressing the high electricity costs when compared to non-renewable sources.

On the circularity front, Dalton stresses the need to keep glass packaging out of Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) to maximize glass collected for recycling and ensure interoperability between nations. Additionally, the industry advocates for the prevention of unprocessed waste glass exports, allowing for a true UK circular economy, and policy reforms to increase flat glass recycling.

Furthermore, Dalton highlights the vital importance of attracting new talent into the industry. He recommends following the recommendations outlined in the Manufacturing Commission report on upskilling industry, manufacturing productivity, and growth in England.

“We must continue to engage with policymakers and industry partners to overcome challenges and implement effective solutions,” said Dalton. “Our commitment to decarbonization, circularity, and skills development will pave the way for a greener and more prosperous future for the UK glass industry.”

Dalton’s bold vision and strategic approach demonstrate the glass industry’s dedication to sustainability and its willingness to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to achieve its long-term goals. As the UK navigates its path towards a more sustainable future, the glass industry stands ready to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s manufacturing landscape.
