<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clayton Glass has taken a technically focused step forward in insulated glazing with the launch of <strong>Triple28<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></strong>, a triple-glazed unit precisely engineered to match the industry-standard <strong>28mm sealed unit thickness</strong>, a dimension historically reserved for double glazing across the UK housing stock.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The configuration of Triple28<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> is built around a <strong>three-pane system with a total build-up constrained within 28mm</strong>, requiring a rebalancing of cavity spacing and material distribution compared to traditional 36–44mm triple-glazed units. At the centre of the design is a <strong>fully glass monolithic core</strong>, removing intermediate plastic components typically used in spacer or support structures. This not only improves recyclability but also optimises internal rigidity while maintaining a reduced overall weight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thermally, the unit delivers a <strong>U-value of 0.8 W/m²K</strong>, achieved through a combination of narrow cavities, advanced coatings, and gas filling strategies. This level of performance allows installers to meet stricter energy-efficiency requirements without transitioning to deeper or reinforced window systems. Clayton Glass highlights that, in real-world applications, this can result in up to <strong>90% improvement in heat retention compared to legacy double-glazed units</strong>, particularly in older properties with outdated glazing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Weight has been a critical engineering constraint. Traditional triple glazing often increases load significantly, requiring stronger hinges and frames. Triple28<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, however, is designed to be <strong>only marginally heavier than a standard double-glazed unit</strong>, ensuring compatibility with existing hardware and avoiding additional structural adjustments during installation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The product also includes a <strong>laminated glass option</strong>, which integrates an interlayer for <strong>enhanced acoustic dampening and impact resistance</strong>. This makes it suitable for urban environments where both thermal and sound insulation are key performance criteria.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Managing Director Ryan Green, the innovation lies not just in performance, but in <strong>removing the retrofit barrier</strong>, allowing installers to upgrade glazing units independently of the window frame. This creates a cost-effective pathway for improving building envelopes without the disruption of full window replacement, particularly relevant for large-scale renovation projects.</p>

At the heart of the design is the façade, where <strong>glazing and fenestration</strong> articulate the building’s public and private zones.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The foyer, café, and circulation areas feature <strong>floor-to-ceiling curtain walls</strong>, creating a transparent envelope that visually connects interior life with the adjacent square. These glazed surfaces maximize daylight penetration, enhance the sense of openness, and turn the theatre into a luminous landmark at night. Technical considerations include <strong>high-performance double or triple glazing</strong>, low-emissivity coatings, and thermally broken aluminum frames to ensure <strong>energy efficiency</strong>, solar control, and acoustic comfort.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In contrast, the performance hall, backstage, and service areas are enclosed behind <strong>opaque panels</strong>, ensuring privacy, controlled lighting, and sound insulation. The careful rhythm of solid and glazed surfaces articulates the building’s functions and provides a clear architectural hierarchy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Structurally, the theatre employs a <strong>beam-free 9 × 18 m reinforced concrete span</strong>, enabling uninterrupted interior volumes and expansive glazing without secondary supports. Fenestration varies strategically: large-format transparent walls in public zones, narrower windows in private areas, and occasional accent openings to frame views. The material palette, <strong>glass, anthracite metal frames, rustic wood, and white surfaces</strong>, creates contrast, warmth, and visual clarity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the current landscape, Building Regulations mandate U-values of 1.2W/m2K for windows and doors in newbuild properties (with &gt;60% glazing area). This stringent criterion extends to extensions on existing properties. Replacement windows, meanwhile, must achieve a U-value of 1.4W/m2K. Anticipating a more dramatic shift, the industry braces for tighter regulations in 2025.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The impending Future Homes Standard, effective from 2025, seeks to reduce carbon emissions in new homes by 75%-80%. With this, the expected U-value for windows in newbuilds could plunge to 0.8W/m2K or lower. While not yet applicable to replacement windows, it signals a clear trajectory towards heightened performance expectations.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-triple-glazing-a-proactive-investment-for-tomorrow"><strong>Triple Glazing: A Proactive Investment for Tomorrow</strong></h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recognizing the need for proactive measures, Thermoseal Group is investing in the capability to manufacture and distribute diverse spacer widths, corner keys, and desiccants to accommodate triple glazing units (TGUs) of varying sizes. As an industry frontrunner, Thermobar, the preferred warm edge spacer bar, is undergoing expansion in response to the imminent surge in demand.</p>
