<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the glass industry propels towards a NetZero future, the upcoming Furnace Solutions 2024 conference stands as a pivotal platform to address the challenges and opportunities in this transformative journey. Scheduled for June 5 and 6 at the iconic Totally Wicked Stadium, the two-day event will bring together glass producers and suppliers, delving into discussions that aim to shape a more efficient and sustainable future for the industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hosted by the St Helens Rugby League Club in the UK, the conference will feature presentations covering a spectrum of topics crucial to the industry&#8217;s evolution. Both glass producers and suppliers will share insights, innovations, and strategies aimed at fostering a more sustainable and resource-efficient glass sector. The conference website will soon provide a comprehensive list of papers, complete with abstracts, offering a sneak peek into the depth and breadth of discussions awaiting attendees.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A unique feature of this year&#8217;s Furnace Solutions is an exclusive tour of the nearing-completion Glass Futures building and facilities, providing participants with a firsthand look at cutting-edge advancements in glass technology. Additionally, the Wednesday evening will witness the prestigious Geoff Evans Dinner within the confines of the Totally Wicked Stadium, creating a networking opportunity for industry professionals.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Visy, a prominent recycling company, has revealed a substantial $50 million upgrade to its Laverton glass recycling factory in Melbourne, Victoria.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a significant move towards sustainable practices, Visy has unveiled a $50 million investment to modernize its Laverton glass recycling facility in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The upgraded plant, when operating at full capacity, has the capability to recycle all of Victoria&#8217;s recyclable glass, effectively doubling Visy&#8217;s glass recycling capacity in the state. This translates to an annual recycling capacity of 200,000 tonnes of glass, equivalent to producing 150 bottles and jars per Victorian resident annually. Beyond environmental benefits, this investment is expected to contribute to the local industry and create additional jobs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The official opening of the plant took place with the presence of the Victorian Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulos, and Visy Chairman, Anthony Pratt. Mr. Pratt highlighted the significance of the upgrade not only for Victoria but also as a step toward manufacturing new glass containers with an average of 70% recycled content. He emphasized Visy&#8217;s commitment to landfill avoidance, considering recycling and remanufacturing as crucial tools in the fight against climate change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This investment aligns with Mr. Pratt&#8217;s 2021 commitment to inject $2 billion over the next decade to reduce landfill, decrease emissions, and generate numerous green-collar jobs in Australian manufacturing. A glass container from Visy with 70% recycled content requires up to 30% less energy to produce compared to a container with no recycled content.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Laverton factory&#8217;s upgrade includes the implementation of 20 advanced optical cameras, enabling the sorting of glass particles down to three millimeters in size. This precision in sorting enhances the circular economy by keeping more glass within the recycling loop. In contrast, the old facility could only process glass particles of 10 millimeters or larger. The processed glass will be remanufactured into new glass jars, bottles, and containers at Visy&#8217;s Spotswood facility, the only glass container furnace in Victoria.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As one of Australia&#8217;s leading recycling companies, Visy collaborates with councils nationwide, processing approximately 40% of Australia&#8217;s kerbside recycling bins.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On January 26, SEFPRO, a global leader, celebrated the United Nations&#8217; Day of Affordable and Clean Energy with a firm commitment to ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. SEFPRO has been actively working on accelerating the transition to a low-carbon energy system, implementing various projects across its global plants. These initiatives focus on incorporating renewable and locally sourced energy to power their furnaces. For instance, SEFPRO is progressively replacing conventional fuels like LPG or NG with cleaner energy sources in the kilns of their sintered plants. Noteworthy trials involving the use of green electricity are already underway. The Palakkad plant of SEPR India takes a step further by engaging in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, such as installing solar panels on the Kanjikode school rooftop. These efforts exemplify SEFPRO&#8217;s dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy practices, marking significant progress on their decarbonization roadmap.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the trial, thirty percent of the furnace&#8217;s total energy consumption was successfully replaced by pure hydrogen/air combustion. This achievement highlights the potential of hydrogen as a clean and efficient alternative, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with glass production.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Air Products: Enabling a Sustainable Transition</strong></h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a leading provider of industrial gases, Air Products played a crucial role in supporting the hydrogen trial at Saint-Gobain&#8217;s facility.
