In a significant step towards a more sustainable construction industry, Saint-Gobain Glass Germany has announced a strategic partnership with Schüco.

This collaboration is specifically designed to systematically integrate used glass from existing buildings back into the recycling cycle, effectively combining the material streams of both companies for a more efficient and impactful process.

The importance of glass recycling in achieving sustainable construction goals cannot be overstated. The reuse of used glass, or cullet, offers a multitude of benefits. Primarily, it serves to conserve valuable raw materials such as sand, soda, and lime, resources that are essential for primary glass production. Furthermore, utilizing recycled glass significantly reduces energy consumption in the manufacturing process. Melting recycled glass requires considerably less energy compared to melting primary raw materials, leading to a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions – a crucial factor in mitigating climate change.

This initiative underscores a broader commitment to circularity that extends beyond individual components. As Andreas Engelhardt, Managing Partner of Schüco, highlights, their approach to material recovery is comprehensive. “We take back every element, whether made of aluminum or plastic, to return the materials to the recycling cycle,” he explains. “This isn’t limited to the profiles, but also includes the glass. We are pleased to have found an experienced partner in Saint-Gobain Glass to actively contribute to the circular economy.” This holistic perspective is vital for building truly sustainable systems within the construction sector.

For Saint-Gobain Glass, increasing the use of recycled flat glass is a key pillar of their strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions. Their commitment to a closed-loop economy is evident in their entire process, from the recovery and recycling of used glass to the production of lower-emission products like their Oraé glass. This partnership strengthens that commitment by providing a dedicated avenue for the recovery of glass from existing building stock.

Raimund Heinl, CEO of Saint-Gobain Germany and Austria, emphasizes the transformative potential of this collaboration. “The partnership with Schüco will give our sustainability concept a further boost. The expertise of Saint-Gobain Glass and Schüco is ideally combined,” he states. “Through this partnership, Saint-Gobain Glass can increase the proportion of recycled glass in its glass production, thus bringing it a step closer to its goal of CO₂-neutral glass production.”

This partnership between Saint-Gobain Glass Germany and Schüco represents a tangible step forward in advancing the circular economy within the construction industry. By systematically integrating used glass into the recycling loop and leveraging their combined expertise, both companies are not only conserving resources and reducing energy consumption but also paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future for building materials.

With two, three or four vents, an intermediate or continuous threshold, and double or triple glazing. The newest generation of Schüco EasySlide presents a variety of individual configurations and, compared to the previous version, it offers improvements in the key areas of thermal insulation and security. In addition, many of the details in the lift-and-slide door such as gaskets, corner areas and geometric elements have been further developed, improving the durability of the system even more. The Schüco EasySlide – New Generation now achieves an average Uf value of 1.47 W/(m2K) in the standard design version and can be implemented with burglar resistance up to RC2. The optimised thermal insulation improves the CO2 impact of the building, which can also be reduced by using bio-attributed PVC. With bio-attributed PVC, the raw material crude oil is replaced by tall oil, which is a secondary product of paper production. This is a renewable, non-fossil raw material from pine trees that does not compete with the food chain. In the PVC manufacturing process, compared to primary PVC from the same producer, up to 90 percent of CO2 can be saved. The process is RSB and ISCC PLUS certified, which means that the raw material can be traced along the entire supply chain from the paper producer to the production facility in Weißenfels, which is verified annually by means of an external certification process. The use of bio-attributed PVC also means that the certification requirements for quality level 4 of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) can be met.

For renovation projects

Thanks to the 70 mm profile basic depth of the vents and a frame trim basic depth of 167 mm, the Schüco EasySlide – New Generation is ideal for use in renovation projects. The vent frames are supplied with pre-fabricated, machine-rolled premium gaskets, whereby the maximum thickness of the glazing is 40 mm as standard. This can be increased to 42 mm by replacing the gasket. The lift-and-slide units are sealed on two levels on the inside and outside, which leads to better thermal insulation and excellent joint sealing and weathertightness. The drainage of the profile and the vapour pressure equalisation are concealed so as not to detract from the appearance of the lift-and-slide door. With the Schüco UnlimitedFinish choice of colours and the option to use aluminium cover caps from the Schüco TopAlu series, the new Schüco EasySlide generation also blends perfectly into the appearance of almost any existing building.

Schüco EasySlide was developed based on the 70 mm Schüco CT 70 system platform and it is fully compatible with this system. Thanks to the use of identical parts, an overall limited variety of components and quick installation using four screw ports, the lift-and-slide door can be fabricated cost-effectively and efficiently. The lift-and-slide roller carrier is installed without additional machining around the fittings groove of the lift-and-slide vent frame. In addition to saving time, this has an advantage in that the reinforcing chamber of the vent frame remains completely closed and the same steel cross sections can be used throughout.

The new project-specific custom façade design enables a functional and energy-efficient upgrade of existing mullion/transom and transom/transom façades that are structurally still in very good condition – without complex dismantling of the old system. Using adapter profiles, the tried-and-tested Schüco AOC add-on construction, including a completely new sealing and insulation level, is built over the existing load-bearing structures. It is both cost-effective and time-efficient.

The AOC 50 / 60 Reno system allows for façade refurbishment even while the building is still in use, without lengthy interruptions or renovation work in the indoor spaces. The interior attachments remain undisturbed throughout the refurbishment. Once the cover caps have been taken off, the glass is removed from the old existing façade followed by the gaskets and glass carriers. The new façade system is then attached to the existing load-bearing structure from the outside and screwed in place. Thanks to the use of individual adapter profiles, the add-on construction can be installed over the old Schüco mullion/transom or transom/transom façade, or it can also be installed on a third-party system that is not from Schüco. AOC 50 / 60 Reno is also suitable for the functional and energy-efficient refurbishment of glass roofs.

The positive effects of upgrading in terms of operation and energy efficiency are achieved by replacing the glazing, as well as the infill panels and isolators if necessary, which leads to a significant improvement in the UCW values of the façade. The continuous gasket system of the add-on construction provides a whole new sealing and insulation level, which achieves a thermal insulation value Uf to 0.75 W/(m²K) with a glass or infill thickness of 8 to 70 millimetres. The excellent values for air permeability (Class AE 1950) and watertightness (Class RE 1950) also resolve further potential weaknesses of the old system.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.glassonweb.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/AOC-Reno-03.jpg" alt="AOC 50 / 60 Reno can be installed over the old Schüco mullion/transom or transom/transom façade thanks to the use of individual adapter profiles, or it can also be installed on a third-party system that is not from Schüco.
Functional upgrades for pioneering properties

Alongside improvements in weathertightness and thermal insulation, new functions can also be integrated into the building envelope which provide sustainable and forward-looking enhancements to the property. Changes in the façade fields enable the use of opening elements, sun shading or building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).

There are further benefits in fabrication and installation as building over existing building attachments and pre-punched profiles, which do not require any additional drilling, saves time when installing the new functional level. It can also be cut to size on site, which makes it easier to adjust to individual conditions. A high number of identical parts for profiles and gaskets as well as the tried-and-tested Schüco AOC gasket system, which offers a gasket for every requirement, round off the benefits for time-saving and efficient fabrication.

The construction industry faces unprecedented challenges: soaring material costs, supply chain disruptions, skilled labor shortages, and the urgent need for climate action.

These pressures are particularly acute in Europe, impacting both new builds and renovations. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation, and Schüco, a leading cross-material systems house, is at the forefront of this transformation. At BAU 2025 and beyond, Schüco has showcased its commitment to a circular and sustainable construction industry, focusing on innovative solutions that optimize the entire building lifecycle.

As a cross-material systems house with a broad product and service offering, Schüco is exhibiting its latest developments and prototypes for a circular and sustainable construction industry at Stand 301 in Hall B1. The focus is on the entire lifecycle of buildings. Schüco offers products and solutions for a value-enhancing renovation process that tie in seamlessly with its modular range for reducing the carbon footprint of buildings. Schüco Carbon Control was introduced for the first time at BAU 2025 and has been consistently further developed ever since. The range of products being presented is rounded off with solutions for modular construction, fire protection and high security for residential building and for the digitalisation of the construction industry.

The property industry is being hit hard by high material costs, supply bottlenecks, shortages of skilled workers and high interest rates, particularly in parts of Europe. Investors are continuing to hold back when it comes to newbuilds and renovations. Added to this are resource shortages and changing climate conditions. These factors and the targets imposed by the European Union are putting the spotlight on the topic of adaptive reuse in the construction industry.

From an existing building to a successful renovation project

In Munich, Schüco is showcasing reliable and value-enhancing products and services for investors, architects, specialist designers, fabricators and building operators to enable them to work with existing buildings in a responsible way that conserves resources. What this means in concrete terms is that Schüco is pooling its decades of experience to offer solutions for a project-specific, value-enhancing renovation process.

With Schüco Perfect, the company is presenting an all-in-one system made from aluminium and, for the first time, PVC-U too. This modular system is a flexible complete solution for windows, patio doors and lift-and-slide doors, meaning it is also suitable for adaptive reuse projects. In addition, there is a range of integrated add-ons in the system, such as sun shading, flyscreens, window sills, safety barriers and thresholds, which can be selected and combined to suit requirements. Replacing and retrofitting the add-ons is also easy thanks to the modular principle. This simplifies and accelerates numerous processes. Large-scale building projects can therefore be executed quickly and cost-effectively.

Schüco Carbon Control

Schüco Carbon Control is a modular range of consultations, products and services with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint of building envelopes. To do this, the entire lifecycle of the building is taken into account and organised according to four lifecycle stages: planning, construction, operation and dismantling. These stages are interdependent. Decisions made during the design and planning stage affect the three other stages. The carbon footprint of a building can therefore be influenced throughout its entire lifecycle, for example via the shape of the building, the choice of material and surface finish, the unit sizes, the use of smart building technologies and the recyclability of the materials. With a comprehensive range of services and products with a reduced carbon footprint, Schüco is actively supporting those involved in the construction process to comply with the building regulation requirements stipulated by climate policy throughout the entire lifecycle of a building.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.glassonweb.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Schueco-Carbon-Control.jpg" alt="Schüco Carbon Control offers a modular solution concept for architects, fabricators, investors, project developers and construction companies.
Low carbon material grades

A building’s embodied carbon can be consciously reduced through the choice of materials. To do this, Schüco offers aluminium and PVC-U material grades with different recycled material content and hybrid constructions. The Low Carbon (LC) and Ultra Low Carbon (ULC) aluminium material grades supplement the standard aluminium and are distributed by Schüco in accordance with the allotment process. For profiles made from Schüco Low Carbon aluminium, a value of 4.47 kg CO₂e/kg is stated in the Environmental Product Declarations, while the value for Schüco Ultra Low Carbon profiles is even lower at 2.27 kg CO₂e/kg. For PVC, three different material grades are available: Balanced, Recycled and Attributed PVC. With the Balanced PVC material standard, profiles are manufactured with recycled material or a formulation that makes optimum use of resources in the inner core. PVC-U profiles in the Recycled PVC material class are guaranteed to contain recycled material in the inner core and, depending on the geometry, are supplied with a recycled material content of between 39% and 57%. With the new, particularly sustainable Bio-Attributed PVC material class, partner companies receive PVC-U profiles based on non-fossil raw materials. In PVC production, crude oil is replaced by tall oil, which is a by-product of paper production. Compared to primary PVC made from crude oil, PVC made from tall oil saves up to 90 percent CO2e in the manufacturing process for the same manufacturer.

Maintenance and servicing

With Schüco Service, the Bielefeld-based building envelope specialist has founded a company that handles the challenges faced by building operators. Schüco Service is a manufacturer and material-independent provider of comprehensive service solutions for windows, doors and façades: from individual orders for repairs to long-term maintenance contracts and replacement parts management to screening and potential analyses for energy-efficient renovation concepts. Experts provide advice and qualified Schüco service engineers implement all of the required services in a timely, professional and reliable manner. And with the Schüco IoF ID, the installed opening and façade units – including their entire maintenance history – can also be recorded digitally. This helps the building operator to efficiently manage their properties throughout their entire lifecycle and plan necessary investments with foresight.

From fire protection to high security

Schüco fire and smoke protection solutions not only offer comprehensive safety, but also feature sound reduction, ease of access and smart control for added convenience. Thanks to Schüco system compatibility, the transition between fire protection areas and standard areas is visually imperceptible – for safety without compromising on design. Dismantling has also been taken into account for Schüco fire and smoke protection solutions, as many of the products are already Cradle to Cradle certified and are based on the principle of the circular economy. The feature exhibit in the Security exhibition area is the Schüco Deflame fire-rated panel, which can now also be used with Structural Glazing façades as well as the FWS 50/60 mullion/transom construction. In addition to fire protection, the visitors can also see high-security windows, doors and façades from subsidiary Sälzer. Sälzer offers individual consultancy, tailored project-specific concepts and comprehensive high-security solutions worldwide from a single source. The Sälzer Centre of Excellence was recently opened at the company’s Marburg site. This showroom has a multifunctional test rig where windows and doors are tested against shock waves and vandalism, as well as for resistance to break-in and break-out attempts.

Residential construction meets interior design

For discerning private clients, residential construction firms and investors in the residential construction sector, Schüco is the first choice for high-quality windows, entrance doors and sliding doors. Be it aluminium or PVC-U, newbuilds or renovations – the combination of timeless design and smart functions creates a modern residential aesthetic characterised by maximum durability. Schüco demonstrates this with minimalist and easy-to-operate sliding and folding sliding systems for maximum opening widths. Window and door systems for all materials with smart door communication complete the residential product range. Visitors will also find stylish systems for interior design with generous glass areas on the Schüco exhibition stand. For example, the subsidiary Schüco Interior Systems is presenting a partition wall system with organic round edges. When combined with the Schüco Smartcube shelving system fitted in the interior, which seamlessly follows the lines of the partition wall system, a uniform look is created.

The Schüco Perfect complete solution for windows, patio doors and lift-and-slide doors will be showcased at BAU in aluminium and, for the first time, PVC-U too. | Picture credits: Schüco International KG

Minimalism meets functionality in the new generation of Schüco’s sliding system range: Schüco AS PD 75.HI.

This new lift-and-slide technology allows for a frameless appearance and a barrier-free level threshold to be combined for the first time. The sliding system can be tailored to meet a variety of usage requirements, making it a versatile and practical solution.

The Schüco AS PD 75.HI Panorama Design sliding system takes comfort and design to the next level. The system boasts a concealed frame profile in the wall, floor, and ceiling for a seamless, frameless appearance. The new lift-and-slide technology ensures easy operation, with a barrier-free threshold that extends out of the outer frame integrated in the floor. The slimline face width of just 35 mm in the interlock section adds to the system’s sleek and modern design.

The Schüco AluWood Design allows for a choice of woodgrain finishes to the profile, and the system is also burglar-resistant up to RC 3 (Resistance Class) and sensor-free finger-trap protection up to security class SK 3. To reduce cooling loads and save energy, the Panorama Design sliding system can be combined with the external Schüco AB ZDS sun shading system (Aluminium Blind, Zip Design Screen).

The Schüco AS PD 75.HI system range is individually scalable, with the Design Line focusing on aesthetics and maximum transparency, while the Access Line prioritizes ease of access and simple operation. Both product lines are available with burglar resistance up to RC 2 (Resistance Class) in a manual or mechatronic (Schüco TripTronic) version and can be combined with the Schüco AB ZDS sun shading system. Integration into a building automation system is also possible with Schüco Building Skin Control.

Experience the ultimate in minimalist design and functionality with the new Schüco AS PD 75.HI Panorama Design sliding system. Visit the Schüco website for more information on the Performance Line, Design Line, and Access Line product lines.
