Schott Pharma , a leading provider of drug containment solutions, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art glass manufacturing facility in Jagodina, Serbia, marking a significant investment in its European operations and bolstering its competitiveness within the region.

This double-digit million euro investment will generate approximately 180 jobs by the end of 2025, contributing to the local economy and solidifying Schott Pharma’s commitment to long-term growth in Europe.

The impressive speed of the project, with groundbreaking occurring in December 2023 and completion within just 1.5 years, underscores Schott Pharma’s efficiency and strategic focus. The facility will specialize in the production of glass ampoules, crucial containers for injectable medications such as analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and anaesthetics, further securing the supply chain for these essential pharmaceuticals.

This strategic expansion comes at a critical time for the pharmaceutical industry. As Schott Pharma CEO Andreas Reisse stated, “At a time when global tariffs and duties are rising and other European-based glass ampoule manufacturers are closing their doors, we can offer our regional customers a clear long-term perspective on how to secure their local supply chain.” This highlights the company’s commitment to providing reliable and locally sourced solutions for its European clientele.

Given that over 40% of the world’s commercial injectable drugs are stored in glass ampoules, the new facility plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of medications to patients. Schott Pharma’s ampoules, manufactured from Type I borosilicate glass, are available in a wide range of options, including clear and amber glass, various shapes (B, C, D), and different breakage systems (one point cut, scoring, colour break).

Starting immediately, ane.energy will supply around 14.5 gigawatt-hours per year to the technology group SCHOTT via a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) from a solar park in Schleswig Holstein, Germany.

The world’s leading specialty glass-maker will use the green electricity at its headquarters in Mainz, as well as plants in Grünenplan, Mitterteich and Landshut. The CPPA covers around five percent of the company’s annual electricity needs in Germany. The contract was initially concluded for a term of two years.

As per the delivery agreement, the company receives green electricity directly from the solar park, along with “as produced” guarantees of origin from ane.energy. The quality is further certified by EKOenergy.

SCHOTT faces the challenge of achieving climate-neutral, energy-intensive production. SCHOTT aims to meet this goal by 2030 and is pursuing much more ambitious goals than its international competitors. A key step is transitioning production from gas to electricity sourced from renewables such as photovoltaics.

To power a single melting tank with electricity, the company requires energy equivalent to the annual consumption of up to 10,000 single-family homes. “We are pleased that, together with ane.energy, we are getting a lot closer to our decarbonization goal,” said Thomas Hahn, Global Category Manager Energy at SCHOTT.

Like it has with many industrial companies already, ane.energy is helping SCHOTT in achieving its ambitious climate targets. With its extensive portfolio, the green energy specialist tailored a contract by strategically selecting suitable plants.

“This CPPA shows that renewables are capable of reliably supplying industrial companies,” said Ralf Höper, Managing Director of ane.energy.

The company currently manages several thousand megawatts of power through its virtual power plant.

The new SCHOTT Termofrost® Inmotion door system reduces the energy consumption of chiller cabinets, is easy to install, and improves the presentation of goods in retail stores. Developed by SCHOTT, a patent-pending hinge makes a new generation of glass door systems possible.

SCHOTT Termofrost® Inmotion has significantly smaller gaps than previous solutions, resulting in wider doors and a larger insulation area. It also offers an improved gasket design. Together, these features provide up to 35 percent better energy efficiency compared to conventional chiller door solutions. But that’s not all: With three-axis adjustability, the hinge simplifies installation and customization while also providing greater safety preventing collisions.

The new product will be on display for the first time at Chillventa, the world’s leading trade show for refrigeration technology, from October 8 to 10, in Nuremberg, Hall 9, Stand 308.

As the name suggests, the new hinge for the SCHOTT Termofrost® Inmotion door solution brings movement and performance to glass door systems for chiller cabinets. The mechanism developed by SCHOTT ensures that the doors close gently and automatically, with self-regulating closing force and door stops – and that the gaps between the doors on both the hinge and handle sides are significantly reduced. The technology allows the use of better sealing solutions and wider glass doors, resulting in a clearer view of the stored goods.

Specially designed for best performance
The main benefit of the SCHOTT hinge and door system is a significantly improved energy performance. Chiller cabinets equipped with SCHOTT Termofrost® Inmotion consume 10 percent less electricity than conventional solutions with sealing lips and around 35 percent less than doors without sealing lips. In a comparative test with a four-door refrigerator, the innovation from SCHOTT consumed 10.26 kilowatt hours per day, compared to the 11.3 kWh of a typical door system with conventional sealing lips.

Additional features show that the desired that the improvements are not limited to energy efficiency. For example, the glass door can be adjusted along three axes to ensure it is always perfectly aligned with the cabinet, and to compensate for unfavourable geometric conditions. Termofrost Inmotion will be available in various designs and for heavy duty or high humidity environments.

Governments worldwide are increasingly recognizing the potential of fusion technology as a limitless energy source for the future and are making substantial investments in this promising field.

One such example is the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which has allocated EUR 18 million to fund the PriFUSIO research project. This project, led by a consortium of 10 companies, is dedicated to researching laser fusion, with a significant portion of the investment, more than EUR 1.3 million, being awarded to SCHOTT, the renowned international technology group, to drive advancements in this ground-breaking area.

The concept of fusion, where isotopes of hydrogen atoms merge to form helium atoms, mirrors the energy-producing process of the sun, which occurs at staggering temperatures of 15,000,000 degrees Celsius and under pressures of 100 billion bars. Laser fusion seeks to replicate this phenomenon on Earth, offering the promise of nearly limitless and environmentally friendly energy production. Unlike traditional nuclear power, fusion technology generates no long-term radioactive waste and is inherently safe from nuclear chain reactions. Central to the success of laser fusion is high-tech laser glass, which plays a crucial role in amplifying the energy and performance of laser light.

SCHOTT has been a pioneer in fusion technology for many years, with its laser glass, manufactured in Duryea, Pennsylvania, USA, playing a pivotal role in enabling the first fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California. Building on this success, SCHOTT’s receipt of over EUR 1.3 million in new funding underscores its commitment to driving innovation in the field of fusion technology. The company aims to develop cutting-edge glass technologies that will further advance nuclear fusion capabilities and contribute to a sustainable future.

Bill James, Head of Research and Development at SCHOTT North America, emphasized the significance of private-public partnerships in advancing fusion technology, citing the milestone achievement of achieving fusion ignition at NIF in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy. James highlighted the collaborative efforts of SCHOTT’s R&D teams globally, with the new funding enabling SCHOTT to intensify its research efforts and collaborate with other industry partners to innovate new laser glass components and optical materials crucial for the development of this transformative form of energy.

As part of its extensive funding for fusion research, the BMBF has launched two joint projects in March 2024 aimed at realizing one of the world’s first fusion power plants, with Germany set to host the pioneering facility. SCHOTT is a key member of the Laser Fusion Consortium (PriFUSIO), comprising 10 leading organizations focused on laser fusion and the advancement of high-power lasers for future power plants.

In conclusion, SCHOTT’s ongoing commitment to fusion technology exemplifies the company’s dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. With significant investments and collaborative partnerships, the fusion research community is poised to unlock the vast potential of fusion technology and pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
