Bucher Emhart Glass’ , a leading provider of glass forming and inspection machinery, reported a slowdown in demand during 2024, a stark contrast to the elevated levels of the previous year.

This downturn, detailed in their recent financial statement, highlights the evolving dynamics within the global glass container manufacturing industry.

Order intake saw a significant decline of 31%, attributed primarily to market uncertainties among key customers which led to project postponements. This directly impacted sales, resulting in a 12% drop. Net sales for the year reached CHF 462 million ($512.7 million), a decrease from CHF 524 million ($581.5 million) in 2023.

Several contributing factors fueled this slowdown. The report highlighted that full inventories of glass containers prompted some manufacturers to temporarily halt production lines. This, in turn, negatively affected the demand for new machinery and, to a lesser extent, spare parts.

Geographically, the impact was uneven. Europe and North America were particularly affected due to the combined pressures of higher energy prices and increasing production costs for glass containers. Conversely, smaller emerging markets demonstrated continued growth, with India posting notable gains.

Despite the challenges, Bucher Emhart Glass maintained a respectable operating profit margin of 16.8%. This was achieved through proactive adaptation measures, including adjusting production planning and reducing capacities at its production sites.

Looking ahead, the company remains optimistic about the long-term prospects for glass container manufacturing. They point to the ongoing trend towards automation as a key driver, motivated by the need for increased efficiency, waste reduction, improved working conditions, and a response to rising wage costs.

Bucher Emhart Glass anticipates a recovery in demand towards the end of 2025, driven by the expected depletion of existing glass container inventories. However, they also caution that sales are likely to be lower than the previous year’s high, and consequently, the operating profit margin is projected to be considerably lower in 2025.

While the current climate presents challenges, Bucher Emhart Glass appears to be taking strategic steps to navigate the market downturn and position itself for future growth. The company’s focus on adapting to evolving industry demands and leveraging the trend towards automation will be critical in its ability to capitalize on the anticipated recovery.

NUTEC Bickley has recently completed the manufacturing of a bespoke drop-bottom furnace designed specifically for the demanding heat treatment process of aluminium castings.

This advanced piece of equipment is slated for installation and commissioning at a facility operated by a leading multinational power solutions corporation, further solidifying NUTEC Bickley’s reputation as a reliable partner in the metals industry.

This custom-engineered furnace utilizes an indirect gas-fired heating system incorporating radiant tube burners. The complete solution encompasses more than just the furnace itself, including a motorized quench tank, a robust rail system, a sophisticated movement system, and a comprehensive load/unload platform equipped with an elevator device. This integrated design ensures streamlined operation and optimal efficiency in the heat treatment process.

The furnace boasts a generous load capacity of 123cm wide x 91cm high x 358cm long, capable of accommodating up to three baskets simultaneously. This allows for processing approximately 1635kg of aluminium parts per cycle, significantly contributing to throughput and productivity for the end user.

Given the specialized nature of the heat treatment process, this furnace incorporates a single temperature control zone for precise and consistent heat distribution. It typically operates at a temperature of 573°C, with a maximum operating temperature of 580°C. To ensure the integrity of both the product and the furnace insulation, a dedicated upper limit temperature controller is integrated into the system, providing a critical layer of protection against overheating.

Arturo Arechavaleta, NUTEC Bickley’s VP, Metal Furnaces, commented on the project, stating: “Efficient and effective solution heat treatment is a vital part of the aluminium casting process, and we are delighted to have been chosen to provide a key component to a highly prestigious customer in the industry. This is the fifth NUTEC Bickley furnace ordered by this brand leader.”

This project highlights NUTEC Bickley’s commitment to providing tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of its clients. By delivering a robust, efficient, and custom-designed furnace, NUTEC Bickley continues to demonstrate its expertise and leadership in the design and manufacture of thermal processing equipment for the metal industry. The successful completion of this project further strengthens the long-standing relationship between NUTEC Bickley and its valued customer.

Thermoseal Group, a leading manufacturer in the fenestration industry, has recently made a significant investment in a new recycling plant at its Wigan factory.

This innovative facility is designed to reduce the amount of manufacturing waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The recycling plant is capable of handling all lengths of Thermobar warm edge, a key product in Thermoseal’s portfolio. By converting Thermobar into pellets that can be reused in the manufacturing process, the plant effectively closes the loop on waste management. This is a crucial development as previously, any Thermobar with attached barrier tape would have been destined for landfill.

Mark Hickox, the Sales Director at Thermoseal, highlighted the significance of this new recycling equipment. By efficiently removing the backing tape from finished Thermobar, the plant now enables the shredding and reuse of any waste generated during the extrusion setup process. This not only minimizes the environmental impact but also enhances the company’s operational efficiency.

One of the notable benefits of this recycling initiative is the ability to incorporate up to 20% of recycled material into the manufacturing process without compromising product performance. As a result, Thermoseal can proudly claim zero plastic waste in all Thermobar production, a commendable achievement in today’s sustainability-focused landscape.

Moreover, the plant is powered by a Solar PV System, further underscoring Thermoseal’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and operate in an environmentally friendly manner. This aligns with the company’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes recent initiatives such as automated production lines that significantly reduced energy usage and expanding the steel stillage scheme to minimize packaging waste.

In addition to its commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices, Thermoseal has also implemented innovative packaging solutions to further reduce its environmental impact. By collecting and reusing packaging materials, such as the plastic reels and cardboard boxes used for Thermoflex flexible spacer bar, the company has successfully diverted a significant amount of packaging waste from landfills.

Mark Hickox emphasized the positive impact of these initiatives, stating, “We significantly cut the amount of packaging that we use and ensure that everything is utilized until its lifespan is exhausted, thereby limiting the waste sent to landfills.” This conscious approach not only benefits the environment but also contributes to maintaining competitive pricing for customers.

In conclusion, Thermoseal Group’s investment in the new recycling plant and its holistic sustainability efforts exemplify a forward-thinking approach to business operations. By prioritizing environmental responsibility, the company sets a commendable example for the industry and underscores the importance of integrating sustainability into every aspect of manufacturing processes.
