In early August 2025, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), together with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), introduced the UAE’s first nuclear-powered low-carbon aluminium, branded MinimAL. The novel metal was produced using clean, carbon-free electricity generated by the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region and is set to supply CANEX Aluminium in Egypt for applications in infrastructure, solar energy, transportation, and architecture.

EGA’s CEO, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, highlighted that global demand for low-carbon aluminium is expected to triple by 2040, positioning MinimAL as a key offering enabled by the UAE’s strategic investment in nuclear energy. ENEC’s CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi noted the landmark underscores nuclear energy’s dual benefits, boosting energy security while decarbonizing heavy industries like aluminium production with reliable 24/7 clean power.

Barakah now delivers about 40 TWh of carbon-free electricity annually, roughly a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs, helping avoid approximately 22.4 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, equal to taking 4.8 million cars off the road.

MinimAL joins EGA’s existing green aluminium portfolio, which includes solar-powered CelestiAL and recycled RevivAL, as the company continues to expand its low-carbon materials offerings to meet global sustainability demands.

In a significant step toward decarbonising the built environment, roof window pioneer Velux Group has signed a long-term agreement with aluminium giant Novelis to supply low-carbon, flat-rolled aluminium containing more than 70% recycled content. This partnership, rooted in a shared vision of sustainability and innovation, positions aluminium as a key player in the transition to a greener construction industry.

The Power of Recycled Aluminium
Aluminium, long prized for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and malleability, is now gaining even more relevance for its recyclability. Producing recycled aluminium uses up to 95% less energy than primary production, drastically reducing carbon emissions. This makes it a powerful tool in lowering the embodied carbon in construction materials, a growing priority across the building sector.

<kbd>VELUX Partners with Novelis for Low-Carbon Aluminium Supply

Tailor-Made Alloys for High Performance Building
The alloy Novelis is supplying to Velux has been specially engineered to meet the high standards required for roof window production, combining durability with sustainability. More than just a supply agreement, this partnership signals a broader shift within the aluminium industry: a move toward circularity and climate-conscious design.

Novelis’ 3×30 Vision in Action
Michael Hahne of Novelis Europe described the deal as a “catalyst for transformation,” highlighting the company’s 3×30 Vision to become the world’s lowest-emission provider of flat-rolled aluminium by 2030. Already, over 50% of the aluminium used in Velux products comes from recycled sources, a figure both companies are working to increase steadily.

Shaping the Future of Low-Carbon Construction
As aluminium continues to play a central role in modern construction, from façades to windows to solar panel frames, collaborations like this set a new standard for responsible material sourcing. With legislation and client demand increasingly pushing for low-carbon alternatives, the Velux–Novelis agreement demonstrates how industry leaders can shape a more sustainable architectural future, one recycled aluminium sheet at a time.
