Kendal, a picturesque town nestled in southern Cumbria, UK, is set to receive a substantial investment to fortify its defenses against flooding. This multi-million-pound project aims to protect the town’s cherished homes and businesses while maintaining its timeless charm and breathtaking riverside views. Spearheading this innovative flood defense system is the collaborative effort between Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, Kuraray, and Flood Control International.

A standout feature of this cutting-edge flood defense design is the integration of high-performance glass within a meticulously crafted stainless steel frame. Meticulously developed in partnership with Pilkington United Kingdom Limited and Kuraray, this bespoke glass solution ensures optimal protection for properties while blending seamlessly with the town’s architectural heritage.

The flood wall incorporates a specially engineered 35 millimeter laminate comprising alternating layers of glass and interlayer. The outer panes boast Pilkington Activ toughened glass, renowned for its self-cleaning properties that efficiently break down organic dirt using natural daylight. As a result, there is no need for regular manual cleaning or the use of harsh chemicals. The middle pane, constructed with Pilkington Optiwhite toughened glass measuring 12 millimeters, further enhances the wall’s structural integrity.

To guarantee its resilience in the face of rising water levels, the glass panels undergo rigorous strength testing. The wall serves as a formidable barrier, assuring the safety of homes and businesses during flood events, all while offering unobstructed views of the scenic riverside and the town’s distinctive architecture.

The inclusion of Pilkington Activ laminated with Pilkington Optiwhite not only provides functionality and safety but also safeguards the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, ensuring that Kendal’s visual allure remains intact.

The initial installation of the glass panels will take place along the 39-meter wall near Stramongate Bridge, serving as an impressive entrance to Gooseholme Park. This location is the first of three sections where glass panels will be integrated, strategically positioned within the heart of the town. These sections, along with six kilometers of additional flood walls and embankments, form part of a comprehensive phased scheme led by the Environment Agency.

The project aims to protect the most vulnerable homes in the Burneside, Staveley, and Ings areas. By combining flood storage in the upper catchment with complementary Natural Flood Management techniques, the scheme will effectively regulate water flow and enhance overall resilience. Once completed, over 1,480 homes and 1,100 businesses will benefit from reduced flood risk, providing peace of mind to the community.
