Hiteco, an Scm Group company specializing in the development and production of hi-tech mechatronic components for machine tool manufacturers, inaugurated its new premises in Rimini.

This event marks a significant milestone in Scm Group’s ongoing commitment to investing in the region where the company was founded over 70 years ago and to expanding its global market presence.

Established in 1977 as an in-house department to provide components for the group’s machines, Hiteco has experienced steady growth over the decades, aided by a constant increase in exports. The company’s progressive growth has resulted in a turnover of around 40 million euros at the end of 2023, making Hiteco one of the leading global manufacturers in the sector for high-tech components for numerically controlled machines used to process a wide range of materials, including wood, plastic, composites, glass, stone, and metal.

The new headquarters in Rimini covers an area of 9,000 square meters, more than double the size of the previous facility in Villa Verucchio. This investment will allow Hiteco to increase its workforce, improve production efficiency (100% Made in Italy), and expand its R&D efforts. The projects focus on the development of new digital services, IoT services, and intelligent products with AI algorithms, as well as an expansion of the range in the stone, glass, and metal machining sectors and Industry 5.0.

“The inauguration of Hiteco’s new headquarters,” said Scm Group President Andrea Aureli, “confirms the group’s desire to continue investing in the area where it was founded over 70 years ago and to acquire new market shares even in a sector such as industrial mechatronic components, which is characterized by significant growth margins.”

Hiteco director Massimo Benvenuti emphasized the importance of the company’s people in achieving this level of excellence, stating, “If today we are an excellence recognized throughout the world with a widespread international presence, this is possible thanks to the people who work with dedication and passion for this company every day, from operations to offices.”

The Grand Opening of Hiteco’s new premises was attended by representatives from the Emilia-Romagna Regional Council, the province and mayor of Rimini, the Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, and various institutions from the world of business and further education. This event underscores Scm Group’s commitment to fostering strong relationships with the local community, a core value that has been a hallmark of the company’s success.

Scm Group’s investment in Hiteco’s new headquarters reflects the group’s ongoing dedication to promoting development and preserving the “Made in Italy” legacy, solidifying its position as a global leader in the production of high-quality, technologically advanced, and sustainable industrial mechatronic components.

A Modern Façade for UTSA’s National Security Collaboration Center

In creating a building befitting of the cutting-edge, high-tech research and cyber security programs taking place at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) National Security Collaboration Center, a combination of red brick, limestone masonry, metal, and high-performance glass were selected for the modern façade.

Enhancing Indoor-Outdoor Connections with Solarban® 70 Glass

The mix of materials helps the building fit within the historic context of downtown San Antonio with Solarban® 70 glass from Vitro Architectural Glass enhancing indoor-outdoor connections.

“We have utilized Solarban® 70 glass on numerous projects and it has been a time-tested solution,” said Adam Bush, AIA, president, Overland Partners, San Antonio, Texas. “For this project, it was determined to be a high-value option as we weighed requirements for building performance, aesthetic criteria, and overall cost.”

Solarban® 70 Glass: The Perfect Balance Between Form and Function

Solarban® 70 glass is the most commonly specified triple-silver-coated low-e glass in the industry. With its transparent, color-neutral aesthetic and unprecedented solar control and visible light transmittance (VLT), Solarban® 70 glass offers the perfect balance between form and function. When coupled with conventional clear glass in a one-inch insulating glass unit (IGU), Solarban® 70 glass provides a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27 and VLT of 64%.

Supporting UTSA’s Cybersecurity Excellence

As the new home for the School of Data Science, the building houses its cybersecurity, cloud computing, data and analytics, and artificial intelligence programs, in addition to the National Security Collaboration Center (NCSS)—ranked as the number one cybersecurity program in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.

Thoughtful Design for Optimal Functionality

Supporting a range of public spaces and the quiet and intimate settings required of a security institution, the Overland Partners designed the building with curtain wall and punched window openings based on programmatic needs and the sun’s orientation.

Maximizing Daylight and Privacy with Roller Shades

The windows range between 2 by 8 feet, 8 inches and 4 by 8 feet, 8 inches, and were calibrated to minimize heat gain and glare. For enhanced daylight, glare control, and privacy, a combination of motorized and manual roller shades were installed throughout the façade.

A High-Performance Glass Facade Delivers Strong Return on Investment, According to New Study

Vitro Architectural Glass recently released the results of an extensive post-occupancy energy-performance study titled, “True Story of a Successful Façade: A Proven Case of Savings, Comfort and Aesthetics.” The study, conducted by independent environmental consulting firm Three Consultoría Medioambiental, analyzed the energy performance of the 68-story KOI Tower in Monterrey, Mexico, which features a façade composed primarily of double-pane insulating glass units (IGUs) fabricated with Solarban® R100 Optiblue® glass by Vitro Glass.

The study found that the installation of Solarban® R100 Optiblue® glass on the tower enabled it to operate with 28% fewer tons of cooling capacity. The related benefits, including the use of smaller HVAC equipment (which requires less labor to install and less power to operate) and smaller duct sizes, translate into annual energy savings of almost $600,000, which could potentially equate to more than $25.5 million in savings over the life of the building.

Furthermore, the study showed that Solarban® R100 Optiblue® glass allowed only 49% of the ambient solar heat to pass through its surface, a significant reduction compared to the baseline performance of 12-millimeter uncoated monolithic clear glass, which showed 76% of the building’s total floor thermal load entering through the glass façade.

Additionally, using Integrated Environmental Solution’s IESVE7 program, the consulting firm calculated a 15.7% improvement in thermal comfort and a 13.7% reduction in glare compared to the baseline 12-millimeter clear monolithic glass. The firm’s analysis also determined that Solarban® R100 Optiblue® glass helped provide thermal comfort to building occupants 90% of the time, despite Mexico’s warm, semi-arid climate.

Aside from the financial and comfort benefits, the study found that more than 73,000 tons of carbon emissions will be mitigated over the life of the structure, which is equivalent to removing 36,979 vehicles from the road.

Overall, the study demonstrates that a high-performance glass façade can yield a strong return on investment. The KOI Tower, which is LEED ®-certified at the Silver level and is the tallest tower in Mexico to achieve this distinction, is an excellent example of how sustainable building design can provide financial savings and occupant comfort while mitigating carbon emissions.
