Originally developed as a premier venue for trade shows, conferences, and cultural programming, the expansion, valued at approximately $500 million, introduces a new architectural standard defined by scale, flexibility, and material performance. The project typology is that of a high-capacity congress centre, designed to accommodate simultaneous large-scale events while maintaining fluid circulation and operational efficiency.

Architectural leadership was provided by Populous, working in close collaboration with Stantec and S2 Architecture. Development oversight was coordinated through the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and supported by the Calgary Stampede organization, ensuring alignment between civic ambition and long-term urban infrastructure strategy.

S2 Architecture played a key role across all project phases, including enabling works, demolition coordination, and construction administration leadership. They managed complex sequencing across overlapping tender packages to keep the existing structure operational during major adaptations, requiring detailed temporary works coordination, logistics planning, and staged transitions. In Phase 3, they acted as Construction Administration Lead, overseeing additional tender packages to ensure continuity through the full build programme.

A defining technical component of the project façade strategy is the integration of high-performance glazing systems, including double glazing IGU units from Tvitec System Glass | Cricursa, incorporating DURITEC tempered specifications, supplied in collaboration with the project teams at Populous, Stantec, and installed by Ferguson Corporation. This material approach supports both the architectural language and the environmental performance targets of the building, contributing to thermal efficiency, durability, and visual transparency across large-scale envelope surfaces.

The completed expansion, finalised in 2024, spans approximately 93,000 square metres and introduces advanced spatial configurations for exhibitions, conferences, and public events. Its design prioritises adaptability, visitor flow optimisation, and structural clarity, enabling it to host international-scale programming with enhanced operational resilience.

In recognition of its architectural and technical achievement, the project received multiple awards in 2025, including the International Architecture Award in the Civic Centre category, alongside several honours from the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada. Collectively, the BMO Centre Expansion stands as a benchmark in collaborative design and construction delivery, where Populous, Stantec, S2 Architecture, and the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation converged to reshape a major civic landmark.

The deal was signed between Glaston, HEGLA and Glassworks in late 2024. In the first stage, HEGLA will supply a sorting system with harp racks to enable the automated and optimized loading and unloading of the processor’s existing FC Series tempering line and double-glazing equipment, with delivery scheduled for July 2025.

The second stage will be the delivery of a new TPS® insulating glass line from Glaston, complete with an automated loading solution.

Glassworks’ investment decision primarily focused on increasing the level of automation in its operations. “Automation is the future,” said Kimmo Kuusela, Senior VP of Sales & Service at Glaston. “Australia and New Zealand are among the most highly automated regions in the world when it comes to glass processing factories. Automation enables glass processors to reduce their costs and remakes significantly, which is crucial in optimizing business growth in the region.”

When evaluating options, Michael Gleeson, Executive Director at Glassworks, travelled to other parts of the world to see various solutions available. The combination of Glaston and HEGLA seemed best suited to meet his company’s needs.

“The machinery’s robustness, our confidence in both European brands and Glaston’s local service and spare parts support were key factors in the decision,” Gleeson said.

“This investment further improves our quality and service offering, particularly with the 7-star regulations and demand for higher performing soft-coats IGUs. It adds capacity and redundancy to our operation to ensure that we continue to be a reliable supplier to our customers,” said Michael Kruger, General Manager at Glassworks.

Another important consideration was having a single point of contact for the combined Glaston and HEGLA offerings. Since starting the exclusive partnership covering the entire Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, South Korea, and China, HEGLA’s sales and distribution activities in the area will draw upon the resources and network of the Glaston Group.

“We’re providing turnkey solutions by combining HEGLA’s glass logistics and handling solutions and Glaston’s glass processing capabilities for insulating glass units and tempering. It’s a perfect combination for increased automation and outstanding efficiency,” Kuusela added.

Designated as a listed structure in 1980, this architectural gem faced significant challenges, having endured two fires, with the latest one in 2018 causing catastrophic damage to the supporting framework and timber construction.
