Tomago Aluminium, located in Tomago, New South Wales, Australia, has set a global benchmark in Current Efficiency (CE%), achieving sustained levels above 95% for its AP18 aluminium smelting cells. This represents the highest CE% in the company’s history and a TAC record since the introduction of AP22 (220,000 amps) in the smelter. The achievement reflects two decades of operational data (2005–2025), continuous process improvement, and a strong team culture focused on excellence.

Grant Farrow, Process Superintendent – Electrolysis, said: “Achieving this sustained level of performance is incredibly rare and sets a new Tomago standard.” The record was driven by three main factors:

Improved Anode Quality – stricter specifications and testing reduced anode variability by 15%, directly boosting CE%.

Stronger Work Quality Standards – consistent training and procedural discipline across three daily shifts enhanced cell stability.

LMO Process Team’s Continuous Improvement – precise bath chemistry control, reduced anode effects, and optimized feeding schedules stabilized pots and increased energy efficiency.

Enhanced manufacturing standards and tighter quality control reduced operational variability, while ownership of performance at every level ensured sustained excellence. Tomago Aluminium plans to refine its operational “sweet spot,” targeting even higher CE% and energy efficiency in the coming years.

The Australian Aluminium Council has publicly voiced its support for the Australian government’s new Statement of Expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission.

The Council, representing the breadth of the Australian aluminium industry, from bauxite mining to downstream processing, sees this initiative as a critical step in safeguarding domestic manufacturers against unfair trade practices.

According to Council CEO, Marghanita Johnson, the distortion of international trade flows poses a significant threat. These distortions can disrupt efficient market operations and lead to detrimental trade diversion, ultimately hindering the competitiveness of Australian manufacturers. Johnson emphasized the importance of the government’s clear articulation of expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission, particularly in light of the increasing challenges faced by Australian manufacturing in the current global landscape. This clarity provides a framework for protecting Australian industry from predatory pricing and other unfair trade tactics.

The Council’s commitment to supporting downstream manufacturers is further evidenced by the addition of five new downstream members in 2025: Almax, Extrusions Australia, Inex, National Aluminium, and Alxin. This expansion solidifies the Council’s position as the leading voice for the Australian aluminium industry, now representing over 95% of the country’s extrusion sector.

“We will continue working with the Government to ensure Australia’s downstream manufacturers can compete through free and fair trade,” stated Ms. Johnson. This collaborative approach is deemed essential to fostering a business environment that allows Australian companies to thrive.

The Australian Aluminium Council believes that with the right policy settings, Australia’s manufacturing industries can attract increased trade and investment. This, in turn, will support the continued growth of the aluminium sector and enable it to meet the ever-increasing global demand for this versatile and essential material. The Council’s endorsement of the government’s initiative reflects a shared vision for a strong and competitive Australian manufacturing sector, built on the principles of fair trade and a level playing field.

Alcoa Corporation has successfully completed its acquisition of Alumina Limited, a move that strengthens its position as a dominant force in the global aluminum industry.

This strategic acquisition marks a significant milestone for Alcoa, solidifying its leadership in the upstream aluminum sector.

A Transformational Acquisition

Alcoa’s President and CEO, William F. Oplinger, highlighted the significance of this transaction, stating, “The acquisition of Alumina Limited strengthens Alcoa’s position as one of the world’s largest bauxite and alumina producers and is expected to result in long-term value creation from greater financial and operational flexibility.”

This acquisition holds substantial strategic value for Alcoa:

Full Ownership of Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC): The acquisition grants Alcoa complete control of AWAC, a joint venture previously held 60% by Alcoa. AWAC boasts a diverse portfolio of bauxite mines and alumina refineries across Australia, Brazil, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Guinea. It also holds a 55% stake in an aluminum smelter in Victoria, Australia.

Increased Economic Exposure: The acquisition deepens Alcoa’s exposure to its core bauxite and alumina operations, solidifying its presence in these key strategic areas.

Enhanced Alumina Shareholder Exposure: Alumina shareholders now gain access to Alcoa’s comprehensive global aluminum business, diversifying their investment portfolio.

Strategic Benefits and Future Prospects

The acquisition of Alumina brings several key benefits to Alcoa, shaping a more robust and competitive future:

Unrivaled Market Leadership: The combined entity cements Alcoa’s position as a leading global supplier of alumina, bolstering its competitive edge in key markets.

Streamlined Operations: Integration of Alumina’s interests facilitates simplified corporate governance, paving the way for greater operational flexibility and strategic options.

Synergy-Driven Efficiency: Alcoa anticipates achieving cost savings and operational efficiencies by leveraging synergies across the combined entity, optimizing resource utilization and streamlining processes.

A Focus on Long-Term Value Creation

Alcoa’s commitment to building long-term value for its shareholders and stakeholders is evident in its pursuit of this strategic acquisition. The transaction, completed through a wholly owned subsidiary, AAC Investments Australia 2 Pty Ltd, involved an all-stock exchange with Alumina shareholders receiving 0.02854 Alcoa shares for each Alumina share held. The acquisition value, based on Alcoa’s closing share price on July 26, 2024, is estimated at approximately $2.8 billion.

Looking Forward: A Strong Future for Alcoa

This acquisition represents a significant leap forward for Alcoa, empowering it to further solidify its position as a dominant force in the global aluminum industry. The company’s commitment to operational efficiency, strategic decision-making, and long-term value creation positions it for continued growth and success in the years to come. The integration of Alumina into Alcoa’s portfolio promises a future marked by greater market reach, operational efficiency, and a strong foundation for long-term profitability.

REDWAVE, the global leader in glass recycling solutions, has recently unveiled Australia’s most advanced glass recycling facility in Laverton, Melbourne, valued at approximately 20 million euros.

This state-of-the-art facility, designed to process 200,000 tonnes of recycled glass annually, marks a significant advancement in glass recycling technology.

The inauguration ceremony at the Laverton site celebrated a groundbreaking collaboration between REDWAVE and Visy, a prominent player in glass recycling and manufacturing in Australia and New Zealand. Together, they have embarked on a transformative project that promises to redefine glass recycling practices in Australia. Equipped with the latest sorting technology, this cutting-edge facility replaces its predecessor, ushering in a new era of sustainable glass management.

Wayne Russell, Executive General Manager – Recycling at Visy, highlighted the commitment to closing the glass recycling loop in Victoria. “At Visy, we are dedicated to closing the loop for glass in Victoria. By partnering with REDWAVE and integrating their world-class optical sorters into our new facility, we have doubled our glass recycling capacity,” Russell affirmed.

The partnership with REDWAVE ensures access to state-of-the-art equipment backed by a reliable technology partner. As the general contractor, REDWAVE oversaw the entire process from design and engineering to delivery, installation, and commissioning, guaranteeing maximum cullet yield.

Revolutionizing Glass Processing:

The new facility boasts a processing capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year, with two-thirds of the input sourced from kerbside mixed recycling collections and the remaining third from the Victorian container deposit scheme. Upon arrival, the glass undergoes meticulous sorting into three distinct colors, down to three millimeters in size. This precise sorting process ensures a steady supply of flint, amber, and green glass for future production, while also maximizing the utilization of by-products and reducing landfill impact.

Innovative Sensor Technology:

REDWAVE has developed a sophisticated solution to address the unique challenges posed by glass-ceramics, employing its proprietary CX camera and lighting unit to separate glass-ceramics, ceramics, stones, porcelain, and off-colors through a multi-stage sorting process.

Increased Efficiency with REDWAVE mate smart plant:

The implementation of REDWAVE mate smart plant software enhances plant efficiency by collecting and processing real-time production data. This data empowers operators, facilitating autonomous plant operation tailored to meet customer requirements. The sorters act as data hubs, transmitting critical information to the software, optimizing plant performance.

Digital Sales Landscape:

Amid the global pandemic, REDWAVE demonstrated innovation by digitizing the entire sales process for the Laverton plant. With a strong commitment to customer experience, all interactions, including reference visits and sorting tests, were conducted virtually, bridging distances of 16,000 kilometers and an eight-hour time difference.

Follow-up Order:

The success of the Laverton project has led to a follow-up contract to construct another glass recycling facility at the Yatala site near Brisbane. This new project is already in progress and is expected to be completed by early 2025.

REDWAVE CEO’s Statement on the Impact in Australia:

“We are proud of REDWAVE’s significant role in reducing glass landfilling in Australia. With our exceptional sorting quality, we can reintroduce glass into the recycling loop, contributing to a more sustainable future.”

In conclusion, REDWAVE’s cutting-edge solutions are revolutionizing glass recycling in Australia, setting new standards in sustainability and efficiency. The collaboration with Visy and the innovative technologies employed in these facilities underscore the commitment to environmental stewardship and resource conservation in the glass recycling industry.

ABx Group’s Announcement Unveils Australia’s Strategic Embrace of Fluorine for Aluminium and Renewable Tech

Australia’s strategic move to include fluorine in its Critical Minerals List marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s resource landscape, with far-reaching implications for the aluminium and renewable technology sectors. The ABx Group’s recent announcement signals potential increased government support for industries reliant on fluorine, positioning it as a key player in the quest for resource self-sufficiency.

Fluorine, a pivotal element in steelmaking, aluminium smelting, and the production of solar PV cells and batteries, now takes center stage on the national agenda. Despite Australia being the world’s fourth-largest aluminium exporter, the nation has traditionally depended on imported fluorine. Notably, aluminium smelters rely on imports of aluminium fluoride, mainly sourced from China, to sustain their operations.

ABx Group’s subsidiary, ALCORE, is at the forefront of fluorine recovery efforts. Employing an advanced reactor, ALCORE transforms an aluminium smelting by-product, known as excess bath, into hydrogen fluoride. This innovative initiative represents a substantial leap towards reducing dependence on foreign imports. In the future, at a commercial scale, a portion of this hydrogen fluoride is expected to be converted into aluminium fluoride through an established commercial process.

In conjunction with fluorine’s inclusion in the Critical Minerals List, the Australian Government acknowledges the importance of aluminium in its new Strategic Materials List. While these materials are crucial for global net-zero emission transitions and other strategic applications, they don’t meet the criteria for the Critical Minerals List due to their less vulnerable supply chains.

Mark Cooksey, ABx Group Managing Director and CEO, conveyed his enthusiasm about this development in a press release, stating, “I am exceptionally pleased that fluorine has been added to Australia’s Critical Minerals List, demonstrating the value of the ALCORE process development. It is exciting to see fluorine placed on the same footing as other critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth elements. As a consequence, I anticipate ALCORE will be able to access further support from government, in addition to the $7.5 million grant already received under the Federal Government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI).”

This addition signifies a substantial stride in Australia’s mineral management strategy, reflecting its commitment to nurturing a more self-reliant and sustainable resources sector. This shift is particularly crucial for materials integral to both established industries and emerging technologies.
