AGC Glass Europe has announced a major advancement in its sustainability strategy by introducing significantly improved Global Warming Potential (GWP) and recycled content values across its Low-Carbon Glass and standard Planibel float glass portfolio. The new figures, validated through third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), reinforce the company’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of architectural glass while increasing transparency for customers.

AGC’s Low-Carbon Glass now achieves a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 4.8 kg CO₂ equivalent per square metre for 4 mm glass thickness under the Cradle-to-Gate (A1–A3) lifecycle assessment defined by EN 15804+A2:2019. This represents 50% lower emissions than the 2025 European average of 10.3 kg CO₂ eq./m², establishing one of the lowest carbon footprints currently available for architectural glass in Europe.

The product also contains more than 60% recycled content, calculated according to ISO 14021 and the Glass for Europe methodology, excluding internal process cullet. Manufactured at industrial scale without volume restrictions, the glass can be laminated, coated with solar control or thermal insulation technologies, and processed into double or triple glazing units.

AGC has also enhanced the environmental performance of its Planibel standard float glass. The updated product now records a GWP of 9.8 kg CO₂ eq./m² for 4 mm thickness, making it 5% below the European average and 12% lower than some of the least sustainable glass products currently available on the European market. The range, including clear, extra-clear and coloured Planibel glass, now features 11.2% recycled content across all markets.

The redevelopment of PENN 2 and Plaza 33, part of the broader transformation of the Penn District in Midtown Manhattan, represents a major step in redefining how architecture, infrastructure, and public space interact in one of the world’s busiest urban environments. Recognized by the Municipal Art Society of New York with a MASterworks Award, the project brings together a wide network of specialists whose combined expertise shaped both the architectural identity and technical performance of the development.

At the center of this transformation is the building envelope, a high-performance glass façade system that defines the visual and environmental character of PENN 2. The façade is the result of close coordination between glass manufacturing, curtain wall engineering, structural design, and environmental performance analysis.

Glass Supply and Façade Execution

A key contributor to the glass system is TVITEC System Glass, responsible for the supply of architectural glazing used in the façade assembly. As a specialist in high-performance glass products, TVITEC provided the base material for the building’s exterior envelope, supporting requirements for transparency, durability, and energy efficiency.

The installation and curtain wall execution were carried out by W&W Glass, a major façade contractor known for delivering complex unitized systems in dense urban environments. Their role included translating architectural intent into a buildable façade system and coordinating installation within the highly constrained conditions above and around Penn Station.

In addition, seele contributed as a façade specialist, supporting advanced architectural envelope systems where precision engineering and structural glass integration are required. Their expertise is typically applied in areas where façade geometry, detailing, or structural glass components demand high technical complexity.

Engineering the Performance of Glass

The performance of the glass façade was not defined by material alone, but through extensive engineering collaboration.

RWDI provided wind engineering and environmental analysis, ensuring the glass system could withstand urban wind conditions while maintaining pedestrian comfort at street level. These studies directly inform façade pressures, movement tolerances, and structural requirements for the glazing system.

Structural integration was developed by Severud Associates and Gilsanz Murray Steficek, who ensured that the building’s primary structure could support the façade loads while accommodating movement, vibration, and long-term performance requirements in a transit-intensive environment.

To ensure quality and compliance, SOCOTEC USA contributed independent testing and verification services, supporting façade performance validation during construction.

The glass façade system of PENN 2 exists within a much larger urban framework led by Vornado Realty Trust as the developer, with MNLA shaping the surrounding public realm and landscape design.

The PENN 2 and Plaza 33 redevelopment demonstrates how modern glass architecture depends on tightly coordinated expertise across multiple disciplines. From TVITEC System Glass supplying the core glazing materials, to W&W Glass executing the curtain wall system, supported by façade specialists, structural engineers, and environmental consultants, the project reflects a highly engineered approach to transparency, performance, and urban integration.

Engineered originally for automotive applications, the CUGHER GLASS J SERIES has established itself as a benchmark solution for high-precision silk-screen printing on glass. Designed to combine stability, automation and repeatability, the system is widely appreciated not only in the automotive sector but also in architectural and solar glass production, where consistent quality and fast cycle times are essential.

At the core of the J SERIES lies a fully automated belt-transport concept. Glass panels are automatically aligned, centered and transferred through the printing cycle with minimal operator intervention. This approach ensures stable positioning during printing, allowing high accuracy even on large or heavy glass formats. The system is particularly suitable for manufacturers handling demanding projects where dimensional precision and uniform print quality directly impact final performance and aesthetics.

Automation plays a key role in the machine’s productivity. Features such as automatic screen adjustment, programmable printing parameters and optimized conveyor synchronization help reduce setup times and maintain constant output throughout long production runs. Operators benefit from user-friendly controls that simplify recipe changes and enable repeatable results across different batches, minimizing errors and material waste.

The J SERIES is designed to support industries that demand reliability and scalable production. In automotive manufacturing, it ensures precise ceramic printing for windscreens and side glass. In architectural applications, it delivers high-quality decorative or functional prints on large façade panels and interior glass elements. Solar glass producers also benefit from the system’s consistent deposition control and reliable repeatability.

By combining robust engineering with smart automation, CUGHER GLASS positions the J SERIES as a long-term production asset focused on efficiency, durability and performance. Its ability to maintain high output without compromising quality makes it an ideal solution for companies seeking reliable large-format glass printing with industrial-level precision and operational stability.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) have transformed Cartier’s Miami Design District flagship at 147 NE 39th Street with a striking undulating glass facade. The curved, multi-panel surface is composed of high-performance laminated glass with a subtle gradient of transparency, engineered to capture and refract sunlight throughout the day. Inspired by a 1909 Cartier brooch, the facade features a delicate, abstract pattern etched directly into the glass, creating a visual rhythm that appears and disappears as shadows shift, softening the boundary between interior and exterior while drawing attention from the street.

Elizabeth Diller, founding partner of DS+R, notes that the undulating skin is designed to “draw in passersby while knitting together the store and the street.” The curvature of each panel subtly mirrors pedestrian movement along the Miami Design District’s shaded walkways, aligning the boutique’s architectural presence with the district’s open, airy atmosphere. At night, the glass refracts interior lighting into a warm, diffused glow, turning the building into a luminous landmark that maintains Cartier’s sense of intimacy and exclusivity.

The facade’s interaction with light continues inside, where Laura Gonzalez’s interiors complement the exterior’s motifs. The etched patterns echo vegetal and coastal references, seamlessly connecting interior columns, ceilings, and display areas with the layered design of the glass. The combination of precision-milled panels and hand-finished detailing showcases a dialogue between technological mastery and artisanal craftsmanship, emphasizing both Cartier’s heritage and DS+R’s contemporary design ethos.

This Miami flagship exemplifies the potential of architectural glass as both functional and artistic material. By combining curvature, light modulation, and intricate surface patterning, the undulating facade transforms a luxury boutique into a kinetic, luminous landmark, offering a sensory journey for visitors while establishing Cartier as an innovative presence within the urban fabric of the Miami Design District.

Pilkington UK has inaugurated a state-of-the-art rolled glass production line at its historic Greengate Works site in St Helens, marking a major milestone in British glass manufacturing. The project involved a remarkable technical feat, engineers had to breach the side of a live float glass furnace to construct a specialized canal that diverts molten glass to the new line located in an adjacent building. This bold approach enables both float and rolled glass production from a single furnace, a shift that significantly boosts operational efficiency and reduces environmental impact.

Reviving Texture by Pilkington
The new line is dedicated to manufacturing the company’s “Texture by Pilkington” range, a curated collection of 21 patterned and decorative glass designs. Popular in interior architecture, this range balances privacy and aesthetic appeal, catering to designers, specifiers, and homeowners alike. By relocating this production from the nearby Watson Street Works, which ceased operations after two centuries, Pilkington UK centralizes its manufacturing processes at Greengate Works.

Sustainability at the Core
This move is more than a logistical upgrade, it’s a cornerstone of Pilkington UK’s sustainability strategy. Consolidating glass production to a single furnace cuts 15,000 tonnes of CO₂e annually, the equivalent of removing over 8,800 cars from the roads each year. It’s a tangible step toward the company’s ambitious climate targets: a 30% emissions reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

Government-Backed Green Innovation
This transformation was supported by a £3.7 million grant from the UK government’s Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF), which backs industrial decarbonisation initiatives. The funding affirms Pilkington UK’s role not just as a legacy manufacturer but as a pioneer in the future of low-carbon glassmaking.

LandVac Titanium Vacuum Glazing marks a breakthrough in the architectural glass industry, offering a combination of exceptional performance, advanced manufacturing, and environmental responsibility. Designed for high-end buildings, this next-generation vacuum glass delivers outstanding insulation and soundproofing, key priorities in modern construction.

With a U-value as low as 0.4 W/(m²·K), LandVac is 2–4 times more energy-efficient than traditional insulated glass units (IGUs) and up to 10 times better than single-pane glass. It also offers superior acoustic insulation, with a sound reduction index of 39 dB, outperforming IGUs in blocking common urban noise like traffic and construction.

What sets LandVac apart is its complex manufacturing process. Its 500-meter automated production line is equipped with over 800 patented technologies, including FLAS (Flexible Lead-free Ti-Alloy Sentry) and CVP (Continuous Vacuum Evacuation Process), ensuring long-term vacuum stability and consistent quality.

Cleanroom production is another key differentiator. Each panel undergoes electronic-grade cleaning and is assembled in a high-standard environment with full air purification and strict contamination controls, far beyond typical IGU production requirements.

Titanium plays a central role, offering superior sealing, durability, and structural integrity. Combined with high-quality Low-E glass, LandVac panels can be tailored to meet specific needs in insulation, sunlight control, and aesthetics.

Certified by ISO, RoHS, SGCC, and Intertek, and backed by reliable after-sales support, LandVac Titanium Vacuum Glazing is not just glass, it’s a high-value, future-proof investment for sustainable architecture.
