The US aluminum market is currently navigating a complex and turbulent environment, facing multi-year high import costs that are sending ripples throughout American manufacturing.

A confluence of factors, most notably escalated tariff tensions, persistent supply chain disruptions, and evolving global trade dynamics, are fueling this dramatic price surge. Understanding these forces is crucial for businesses that rely on aluminum and are seeking to mitigate potential impacts.

Tariffs, Tensions, and Tonnage: A Triad Driving Up Costs

The pressure on US aluminum prices is being driven by a potent combination of external pressures. The most immediate factor is the recent imposition of additional tariffs on aluminum imports from the European Union and the United Kingdom. Effective April 9, 2025, these new levies – a 20% tariff on EU-origin goods and 10% on UK imports – build upon the pre-existing 25% Section 232 duty from 2018. For EU producers, the effective tariff rate now sits at a staggering 45%, creating significant disincentives for transatlantic trade.

This tariff pressure has had an immediate and measurable impact on the Midwest Premium, the benchmark regional surcharge that incorporates transportation, handling, and tariffs. According to recent data from Reuters and CME Group, the Midwest Premium has spiked to over 33 cents per pound, a level not seen since the trade war years of 2018-2019. This represents a near-doubling of the average of 17-18 cents recorded in early 2023, highlighting the rapid and substantial impact of the tariff increases.

Beyond tariffs, escalating tensions in the Middle East are further compounding supply chain challenges. Forced rerouting of commercial ships via the Cape of Good Hope, necessitated by these tensions, is significantly extending transit times. Voyages from the Persian Gulf to the US East Coast are now 40% longer, while Asia-to-US East Coast routes are experiencing a 30% increase. While container shipping rates have moderated from their 2021 peaks, policy uncertainty and ongoing capacity constraints at North American ports remain significant risks. Industry experts are rightly concerned that volatile trade policies could trigger another surge in freight costs, further exacerbating the situation.

China’s Opportunity in a Divided Market

While facing its own set of US tariffs and quotas, the current US-EU trade friction presents strategic opportunities for China. Chinese aluminum, particularly from Rusal-backed ventures and state-owned enterprises like Chinalco, is increasingly being redirected towards alternative markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This shift highlights the interconnectedness of the global aluminum market and the potential for regional disruptions to have far-reaching consequences.

Looking Ahead: Navigating Uncertainty

The US aluminum market is facing a period of heightened volatility and uncertainty. Businesses that rely on aluminum should closely monitor these developments and proactively explore strategies to mitigate potential impacts. This includes diversifying sourcing options, carefully managing inventory levels, and engaging in thorough risk assessments. As the global trade landscape continues to evolve, adaptability and strategic foresight will be crucial for navigating this challenging environment.

The Australian Aluminium Council has publicly voiced its support for the Australian government’s new Statement of Expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission.

The Council, representing the breadth of the Australian aluminium industry, from bauxite mining to downstream processing, sees this initiative as a critical step in safeguarding domestic manufacturers against unfair trade practices.

According to Council CEO, Marghanita Johnson, the distortion of international trade flows poses a significant threat. These distortions can disrupt efficient market operations and lead to detrimental trade diversion, ultimately hindering the competitiveness of Australian manufacturers. Johnson emphasized the importance of the government’s clear articulation of expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission, particularly in light of the increasing challenges faced by Australian manufacturing in the current global landscape. This clarity provides a framework for protecting Australian industry from predatory pricing and other unfair trade tactics.

The Council’s commitment to supporting downstream manufacturers is further evidenced by the addition of five new downstream members in 2025: Almax, Extrusions Australia, Inex, National Aluminium, and Alxin. This expansion solidifies the Council’s position as the leading voice for the Australian aluminium industry, now representing over 95% of the country’s extrusion sector.

“We will continue working with the Government to ensure Australia’s downstream manufacturers can compete through free and fair trade,” stated Ms. Johnson. This collaborative approach is deemed essential to fostering a business environment that allows Australian companies to thrive.

The Australian Aluminium Council believes that with the right policy settings, Australia’s manufacturing industries can attract increased trade and investment. This, in turn, will support the continued growth of the aluminium sector and enable it to meet the ever-increasing global demand for this versatile and essential material. The Council’s endorsement of the government’s initiative reflects a shared vision for a strong and competitive Australian manufacturing sector, built on the principles of fair trade and a level playing field.

As the world awaits updates on US aluminum tariffs, several industry associations have shared their perspectives.

Donald Trump said he will announce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the US that would affect “everybody’.

Charles Johnson, president & CEO of the Aluminum Association, issued the following statement:

“We appreciate President Trump’s continued focus on strong trade actions to support the aluminum industry in the United States. During his first term the president was early to recognise the genuine threat that non-market actors pose to U.S. manufacturing industries like ours. These actions helped lead to more than $10 billion in industry investment since 2016. In order for these investments to be successful and for American firms to make the cars, trucks, beverage cans, fighter jets, body armor and more that our industry provides, we need ready and affordable access to metal. Today, there is not enough smelting capacity in the United States to supply the growing aluminum industry with the input materials it needs.

To ensure that American aluminum wins the future, President Trump should secure access to the aluminum metal supply needed for American manufacturers, while continuing to take every possible action at the U.S. border against unfairly traded aluminum from China and elsewhere. This is consistent with action his administration wisely took during his first term and we are confident he will take again.”

Jean Simard, President and CEO of the Aluminium Association of Canada.

“We are disappointed, but we were expecting this and are ready for it”

“This situation will unfortunately impact workers and consumers in America with the immediate increase on the price of aluminium.”

Paul Voss, Director General, European Aluminium:

“We need to see the detail in writing before we can provide an official reaction. Slightly less officially, it seems to me on the face of it that this would be an unfortunate and unhelpful move that wouldn’t help anybody on either side of the Atlantic with anything.

Until we get more clarity, I can only say that we are busy talking with as many relevant people/institutions as we can to better understand the situation and reflect together on how to move forward.”

Nadine Bloxsome, CEO of Aluminium Federation (ALFED) commented:

“The UK Government appears to be downplaying the impact of these tariffs… The reality is that this move would not only increase costs for UK aluminium exporters but also destabilise supply chains, force businesses to seek alternative markets, and create trade distortions that could flood the UK with low-cost aluminium imports from countries redirected out of the US market.

“This is not just a trade issue, it’s an economic and industrial concern… Without robust trade protections and policy interventions, we risk falling behind in an increasingly protectionist global market.”

She disclosed that ALFED is engaging with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) to push for greater recognition of these risks, but called for the industry to voice their opinions.

A week has passed since the White House reintroduced a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel on all global imports.

The move to reimpose tariffs, first implemented in 2018, comes as the current administration says it’s aiming to protect America’s aluminum and steel industries from “unfair trade practices and global excess capacity.”

While several industry and union figures, including Aluminum Association president Charles Johnson and American Primary Aluminum Association president Mark Duffy, applaud the moves, most organizations are wary that the tariffs, should they take effect as scheduled on March 12, will harm United States companies and consumers. In particular, the construction industry faces a complex landscape in the coming years, especially smaller firms running on tight margins.

The Council on Foreign Relations says the tariffs will likely raise costs for industries that rely on aluminum and steel, such as the glass industry, which uses aluminum for window, door, storefront and curtainwall systems. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, America obtains nearly half (44%) of its aluminum abroad. Two-thirds come from Canada. A 25% tariff on aluminum will increase prices throughout the built environment, trickling down to consumers.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) argues the new tariffs are projected to raise the cost of imported steel and aluminum products by several billion dollars, adding layered costs that could impact builders’ ability to deliver new single-family and multifamily projects.

“Through an executive order on his first day in office, President [Donald] Trump made it a top priority to reduce housing costs and increase housing supply to ease the nation’s housing affordability crisis,” says NAHB chairperson Carl Harris. “The administration’s move to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum products imports into the U.S. runs totally counter to this goal by raising home building costs, deterring new development and frustrating efforts to rebuild in the wake of natural disasters. Ultimately, consumers will pay for these tariffs through higher home prices.”

The glass industry also expects the tariffs to increase costs throughout the sector. An informal poll conducted by USGlass magazine found that 65% of respondents expect increased costs due to the tariffs. Fourteen percent of respondents expect to see some increases, and 14% expect no significant changes. Six percent of respondents stated they don’t use aluminum.

Not all news is negative, however. S&P Global research indicates minimal impact on consumer prices and gross domestic product due to the tariffs. Its research notes that the tariffs should be positive for domestic aluminum and steel industries, though risks to downstream users are high.

According to S&P’s report, “Higher prices for imported products could ease competitive pressure that the U.S. producers are under. It could also lead U.S. producers to raise their prices—citing the new tariffs as the reason. That means U.S. producers that rely heavily on steel and aluminum imports would likely see their cost of doing business rise.”

The tariffs could be dialed back, much like in 2018, when Trump granted exemptions to Canada and Mexico, and President Joe Biden expended exemptions with the European Union, Japan and the United Kingdom. The Center for Strategic and International Studies notes that the tariffs are likely more in response to China’s state-driven overproduction of metals than a weapon to gain concessions from global allies. However, Bloomberg Intelligence reports China will barely feel the effect of the tariffs. The country’s largest aluminum manufacturer exports less than 1% of its product; others earn even less revenue from North America.

Hydro and Rio Tinto join forces to identify and evaluate available carbon capture technologies the aluminium electrolysis process.

The companies have signed a partnership agreement that allows for certain information to be shared.

Together the partners expect to invest approximately USD 45 million over five years to support this initiative.

Most of the work is expected to be conducted at Hydro’s facilities in Norway and Rio Tinto’s facilities in Europe.

Anode consumption during the electrolysis process accounts for approximately three quarters of a smelter’s direct CO2 emissions.

Capturing carbon from aluminium smelter flue gas, with CO2 concentrations around 1 percent (vol.), requires adapting direct air capture technologies for higher concentrations or point source technologies for lower concentrations.

In both cases, the current technology requires significant development efforts to mature from laboratory to commercial scale. The collaboration between Hydro and Rio Tinto aims to speed up this development process.

“Hydro is accelerating our ambitious roadmap to achieve net-zero aluminium production by 2050 or sooner, advancing solutions across every step of our value chain, from mine to metal. Carbon capture technologies are critical to decarbonising existing smelters. Our partnership with Rio Tinto will amplify efforts to develop fit for purpose solutions that can accelerate the aluminium industry’s transition towards net-zero production,” says Hydro President and CEO Eivind Kallevik.

“Rio Tinto’s is committed to reaching net-zero emissions from our operations by 2050, and we know that achieving our climate objectives will require a portfolio of solutions. By working in partnership with Hydro to assess certain carbon capture technologies for aluminium smelters, we are finding better ways to leverage our complementary networks and R&D capabilities to address the climate change challenge,” says Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm.
