AGC is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future with the launch of AGC Recycle Glass, a new service designed to dramatically increase flat glass recycling rates.

This initiative addresses a critical gap in current demolition and renovation processes by actively collecting both offcut glass from fabrication and end-of-life insulating glass units (IGUs) from construction sites. The ultimate goal is to reintegrate this valuable material back into the flat glass production cycle, fostering a truly circular economy.

Currently, the potential of glass as a recyclable material is often overlooked during building deconstruction and modernization projects. While the recycling of materials like plastics and aluminum is increasingly prioritized, the importance of returning glass to a high-quality recycling stream has not received the same level of attention. AGC aims to change this perception and establish a more robust infrastructure for flat glass recovery.

The AGC Recycle Glass service is a meticulously planned process designed for efficiency and effectiveness. It begins with an early project assessment by AGC, identifying potential sources of recyclable glass. Subsequently, during building demolition or dismantling, window or facade components are carefully removed by specialized companies in close coordination with the project team. The collected glass is then placed in specialized containers provided by AGC’s network of partners.

These containers are then transported to carefully selected flat glass recyclers. Here, the glazing undergoes a rigorous processing procedure to produce high-quality cullet that meets the stringent standards required for reintegration into flat glass production. This processed cullet is then delivered to the nearest AGC flat glass manufacturing facility, where it is thoroughly inspected before being fed directly into the melt. To acknowledge the environmental benefits of participation, clients receive a certificate confirming the resource savings and CO2 reductions achieved through their contribution.

This initiative represents a tangible commitment to creating a true circular economy within the flat glass industry. The increased use of cullet in the melt is a powerful lever for achieving future CO2 neutrality. By returning more cullet to the production cycle, the reliance on virgin raw materials is significantly reduced. Furthermore, increasing the cullet content directly impacts energy consumption and CO2 emissions during the melting process. A 10% increase in cullet content leads to a 2.5% reduction in the energy required for the melt. Impressively, every ton of cullet utilized saves approximately 1.2 tonnes of raw materials and reduces CO2 emissions by 0.7 tonnes.

The launch of AGC Recycle Glass is a pivotal moment in the industry’s journey towards sustainability. By providing a dedicated and streamlined collection service, AGC is facilitating the return of valuable flat glass into the production cycle, contributing to a more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible future.

AGC Flat Glass Ibérica and Helexia España Commission Groundbreaking 4,600 kW Rooftop Photovoltaic Plant

AGC Flat Glass Ibérica, in collaboration with Helexia España, proudly announces the successful commissioning of a remarkable 4,600 kilowatts photovoltaic plant for self-consumption. Situated at the Port of Sagunto in Valencia, Spain, this innovative installation covers an expansive industrial site and boasts 8,800 high-performance photovoltaic modules, spanning an impressive 48,400 square meters of rooftop space – equivalent to 10 football fields. With an annual production capacity of 7 gigawatt hours, this extraordinary project will significantly contribute to environmental preservation by preventing over 800 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.

AGC’s Environmental Commitment and Sustainable Vision

As a global leader in the glass industry, AGC stands at the forefront of developing environmentally conscious products and prioritizing sustainable practices. The group considers sustainability as an integral part of its corporate social values and strives to minimize its environmental impact through cutting-edge technologies and manufacturing processes. AGC has set ambitious goals, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and aims for a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a 50% reduction in GHG emissions per unit of sales by 2030. These targets encompass Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, based on 2019 levels. AGC’s commitment to energy efficiency solutions and an increased reliance on renewable energy sources across its production facilities underpins its sustainable vision.

A Powerful Partnership with Helexia España
