National Apprenticeship Week (NAW)

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) from November 17-23, 2024, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the significant strides made in registered apprenticeship programs across the United States over the past decade.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of this important event, which highlights the successes and values of apprenticeships in various industries, fostering a skilled workforce that is essential for economic growth.

According to recent data from NAW, the national apprenticeship system has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 360,000 active apprentices in 2015 to an impressive 660,000 in 2024. This increase is a testament to the concerted efforts made by organizations, employers, and policymakers to promote and expand apprenticeship opportunities. Since 2015, nearly 23,000 new registered apprenticeship programs have been established, resulting in over 2.3 million new apprentices entering the workforce. Notably, the construction industry has reached an all-time high, boasting 332,000 apprentices, underscoring the critical role that skilled trades play in the economy.

In particular, the glass and glazing industry has recognized the value of apprenticeships in developing a skilled workforce. The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) has been at the forefront of this initiative, training approximately 3,000 apprentices annually at more than 100 training centers across the U.S. and Canada. Through IUPAT’s glazing apprenticeship program, members gain comprehensive knowledge in areas such as glass selection, handling, cutting, installation, and replacement. They also acquire specialized skills in storefronts, curtainwalls, room dividers, and security windows, preparing them for successful careers in the industry.

To commemorate National Apprenticeship Week, IUPAT’s District Council 21 (DC 21) hosted an open house at the Finishing Trades Institute in Philadelphia. The event welcomed middle and high school students, providing them with insights into the union’s apprenticeship programs. Tureka Dixon, DC 21’s recruitment coordinator, shared her personal journey, stating, “Joining IUPAT changed my life. It’s not just a job; it’s a career, and you can care for your family. People think you must know someone to join our union, but it’s false. Our apprenticeships are for everyone, so we partner with the Philadelphia School District. We want to provide opportunities for all young people, especially girls and people of color.”

The success of National Apprenticeship Week and the growth of apprenticeship programs is a clear indication of the evolving landscape of workforce development in the United States. These initiatives not only provide individuals with valuable skills and career pathways but also contribute to the economic vitality of communities nationwide. As we look to the future, it is essential to continue fostering inclusive and accessible apprenticeship opportunities, ensuring that all individuals have the chance to thrive in their chosen fields.

As we celebrate the achievements of the past decade during National Apprenticeship Week 2024, let us recognize the importance of these programs in shaping a skilled workforce and empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds. The commitment to expanding apprenticeship opportunities is crucial for building a robust economy and creating a brighter future for generations to come.
