Moët Hennessy and Verallia Launch R&D Partnership for Lighter Glass Bottles

Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of LVMH, and Verallia have launched a strategic research and development partnership focused on developing lighter, more resource-efficient glass packaging without compromising mechanical performance.

The programme targets a 30–50% reduction in bottle weight, using technologies designed to strengthen glass while maintaining the resistance required for premium wine and spirits packaging. The partnership addresses the environmental impact of glass, which can account for up to 30% of the wine and spirits industry’s carbon footprint.

For Moët Hennessy, lightweighting and a lower-carbon energy mix are already central to its decarbonisation strategy. Results from this approach have been implemented across products from Champagne Maisons, Hennessy, Terrazas de los Andes, Chandon and Château Galoupet.

Verallia is contributing its expertise in glass lightweighting, manufacturing technologies and industrial decarbonisation. Its emissions reduction pathway, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), targets Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 and Scope 3 by 2050.

The new partnership brings together Moët Hennessy’s requirements for premium packaging with Verallia’s glass manufacturing capabilities, aiming to develop a new generation of bottles that use significantly less material while retaining the performance expected from high-end packaging.
