Constellium, a global leader in aluminum rolled products and solutions, has been awarded a prestigious France 2030 grant for its innovative “Wing of the Future” project.

This collaboration with the French Civil Aviation Administration (DGAC) marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient future for the aerospace industry.

The project leverages Constellium’s expertise in aluminum processing and material science to address the evolving needs of aircraft manufacturers. With aircraft production poised for significant growth and a rising global demand for reduced environmental impact, the industry requires lighter, more recyclable, and faster-to-manufacture aircraft components. The “Wing of the Future” directly tackles these challenges.

Engineering and manufacturing teams from Constellium’s R&D center, C-TEC, and its Issoire, France facility are collaborating to explore the full potential of aluminum in next-generation aircraft wings. This involves developing cutting-edge technologies and materials designed to enhance aircraft performance while minimizing environmental footprint.

A key focus is on improving the recyclability of aluminum throughout the aircraft lifecycle. The project is investigating solutions for efficient recovery and recycling of pre-consumer scrap, including techniques such as pre-machining and Friction Stir Welding (FSW). FSW, in particular, offers the potential to reduce material thickness and facilitate bonding, ultimately leading to lighter and more fuel-efficient aircraft structures. These advancements contribute not only to reduced fuel consumption but also to a significant decrease in carbon emissions throughout the aircraft’s operational life.

Philippe Hoffmann, President of Constellium’s Aerospace and Transportation business unit, expressed his enthusiasm for the award: “We are incredibly proud to receive the France 2030 award, which underscores Constellium’s critical role in developing sustainable solutions for aerospace. Our ‘Wing of the Future’ project is an ambitious initiative that not only seeks to reduce aircraft weight and improve fuel efficiency but also emphasizes recyclability, paving the way for a greener aviation industry. Receiving this award validates the critical role of aluminum in supporting tomorrow’s aircraft and reinforces our commitment to help the aerospace sector achieve its Fly Net Zero objectives.”

The France 2030 grant provides vital support for this groundbreaking research and development. Constellium’s “Wing of the Future” project exemplifies a commitment to innovation and sustainability within the aerospace sector, setting a new standard for lightweight, recyclable, and efficiently manufactured aircraft components. The project’s success promises significant advancements in achieving the industry’s ambitious Fly Net Zero goals.
