Ciner Glass Invests in Sustainable Future with New Greenfield Container Glass Plant in Lommel, Belgium

The global demand for sustainable packaging solutions has never been more pressing, and companies are increasingly looking for ways to meet consumer expectations while minimizing their environmental footprint.

In this context, Ciner Glass, a leading player in the glass manufacturing industry, is making a significant investment in a new greenfield container glass production facility in Lommel, Belgium. This ambitious project, now under construction, represents not only a major advancement in glass production technology but also a commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth in the region.

Overview of the Lommel Project

Ciner Glass’s new facility in Lommel is set to be a state-of-the-art container glass production plant designed to enhance efficiency and environmental performance. The project will feature two advanced furnaces with a combined production capacity of 650 tonnes per day, significantly contributing to the company’s output. Each furnace will feed four production lines, utilizing sophisticated 8+8 and 10+10 triple gob tandem machines that optimize the manufacturing process and ensure high-quality glass production.

A Collaborative Effort

To ensure the success of this extensive project, Ciner Glass Belgium is collaborating closely with prominent partners in the European glass industry. The company recently signed a machinery equipment contract on October 11, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in bringing this vision to fruition. The key partners involved in the construction of the plant include:

Bottero : Serving as the project leader, Bottero will supply the hot-end equipment, ensuring that the core production processes are both efficient and highly sophisticated.

Lahti Glass Technology: Tasked with providing the batch plant, Lahti’s technology will play a crucial role in the preparation of raw materials for the glass production process.

TecoGlas: Known for its innovative furnace solutions, TecoGlas will be responsible for constructing the furnaces themselves, ensuring they meet the high standards set by Ciner Glass for energy efficiency and output.

E2Pack: The company will provide cold-end packaging equipment, facilitating the smooth transfer of finished products while maintaining quality and efficiency.

Tiama: Specializing in inspection machines, Tiama will ensure that the quality of the glass produced meets the stringent safety and quality benchmarks expected by customers.

This collaborative approach highlights Ciner Glass’s dedication to integrating cutting-edge technology and expertise throughout the production process, ensuring that the Lommel plant operates at the forefront of the glass manufacturing sector.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The investment in the Lommel facility represents a significant financial commitment from Ciner Glass, amounting to over EUR 600 million. This investment is not only noteworthy for its size—one of the largest foreign investments in Belgium in the past decade—but also for its potential to stimulate local economic growth. The project is anticipated to create more than 500 direct jobs, providing new employment opportunities for the local workforce and fostering community development.

Furthermore, the facility aims to serve the broader European glass market, helping to meet the increasing demand for sustainable and high-quality glass packaging solutions. By 2027, with both furnaces operational, the plant will produce a staggering 1,300 tonnes of glass daily, translating to an annual output of 430,000 tonnes. This capacity will enable Ciner Glass to produce over two billion glass bottles, playing a pivotal role in supporting the beverage and food industries’ shift towards environmentally friendly packaging options.

Commitment to Sustainability

In addition to its economic contributions, Ciner Glass is deeply committed to reducing its environmental footprint through innovative production practices. The company’s investment in the new plant aligns with its broader strategy to provide customers with high-quality container glass that is not only lighter but also produced with minimal energy consumption.

The use of advanced technology at the Lommel facility will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with glass production. By adopting more efficient manufacturing processes and utilizing renewable resources wherever possible, Ciner Glass aims to set a benchmark for sustainability in the industry. The combination of improved technology and commitment to environmental stewardship positions Ciner Glass as a leader in the drive towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Ciner Glass’s investment in the new greenfield container glass plant in Lommel, Belgium, is a significant step towards meeting the challenges of modern manufacturing while supporting local economies and promoting sustainability. The collaboration with esteemed European partners ensures that the facility will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, resulting in a highly efficient and eco-friendly production process.

As Ciner Glass progresses towards the completion of this ambitious project, it not only reaffirms its position as a key player in the glass industry but also demonstrates a commitment to responsible production practices that benefit both the economy and the environment. This investment is a clear indication that the future of manufacturing lies in sustainable development, and Ciner Glass is poised to lead the charge. With the Lommel plant set to become operational by 2027, the implications of this project will resonate far beyond local borders, contributing to a greener planet and a more sustainable economy for generations to come.
