ASTM International’s glass and glass products committee (C14) is developing a new proposed standard to establish quality assessment guidelines for decorative enamel applications on flat glass. The specification, identified as WK88132, is intended to provide the industry with clearer and more consistent criteria for evaluating decorative coated glass products.
The proposed standard builds on ASTM C1048, which currently addresses heat-treated flat glass, including spandrel glass applications. However, ASTM members say the existing standard has been used more broadly for decorative enamel products despite limitations in viewing conditions and acceptable tolerances.
Michael Saroka, chief product officer at Goldray Glass and an ASTM member, said the industry previously lacked a dedicated standard for decorative products. As a result, C1048, particularly Condition B, was often applied as a general reference for enamel-on-glass applications.
The new specification aims to address this gap by establishing requirements more specifically suited to decorative enamel products, helping manufacturers, processors, architects and other industry stakeholders assess quality more consistently.
