Guardian Glass and Webasto Luxembourg have announced a new agreement, where Guardian will supply a coated glass solution from its SilverGuard™ product family for Webasto’s panoramic sunroofs.
This innovative glass technology aims to enhance the features and performance of Webasto’s advanced roof systems.
Electric vehicles, in particular, face the challenge of maintaining interior comfort while preserving battery life. The energy required for heating and cooling can significantly impact an EV’s range. Webasto’s panoramic sunroofs, enhanced by Guardian’s new glass solution, address this issue.
Guardian’s SilverGuard glass features an innovative, low-reflectivity, low-E coating on the interior surface of the roof glass, combined with a solar control coating on the surface facing the laminated glass interlayer. These coatings work together to improve the total solar factor and thermal insulation of the glass roof, while still providing clear, unobstructed views.
The enhanced thermal properties of the SilverGuard glass help optimize the energy efficiency of Webasto’s roof systems, which can include features such as integrated ambient lighting, light effects, switchable glazing, or solar cells. These advanced capabilities contribute to the overall comfort and experience for vehicle occupants.
“We are very pleased to enter into this agreement with Guardian Glass,” says Axel Berning, Managing Director of Webasto Luxembourg. “With the coatings from Guardian, we will start series production of our first high-performance glass roofs this year.”
Guardian’s Bascharage plant, equipped with the company’s most energy-efficient furnace, has already begun delivering prototypes and will commence pre-series SilverGuard glass product deliveries in the second half of 2024. The proximity to Webasto Luxembourg helps streamline the manufacturing process and bring more efficiency to the production of this specialized glass solution.
“Webasto’s proven, international success in providing leading solutions for high-performance roofs makes this a mutually beneficial partnership,” says Guus Boekhoudt, Executive Vice President of Guardian Glass. “Guardian Glass looks forward to applying our advanced technology and knowledge to future automotive glass applications in the automotive market.”
This collaboration between Guardian Glass and Webasto Luxembourg underscores the importance of innovative glass solutions in enhancing the performance and user experience of modern vehicles, particularly in the growing electric vehicle market.
